mircea_popescu there must attach penalties to belonging in the progressive camp. [00:50]

asciilifeform decimation: would be interesting to see who contributes something other than drivers for own hardware. [00:52]
mircea_popescu red hat makes hardware ?! [00:52]
decimation good point, they don't break that out [00:53]
asciilifeform not redhat, but, say, renesas and analog devices [00:53]
decimation redhat does not make hardware, but they provide guarantees for certain baselines [00:53]
asciilifeform amd, freescale, fujitsu, etc. [00:53]
mircea_popescu point remains : once there's a penalty to being a progressive, things can be turned into some sort of shape. [00:53]
decimation So you can be Redhat Certified (c) [00:53]
asciilifeform mircea_popescu: this almost certainly requires a dead usg, or at the very least one which is in no condition to sinecure progressives. [00:54]
mircea_popescu does not. [00:54]
mircea_popescu sinecure does not work. [00:54]
asciilifeform as it stands, the progressives want for nothing. [00:54]
mircea_popescu consider that the protestants choked the catholics, with a very lively french government that sinecured them to heaven. [00:55]
mircea_popescu sinecure is counterproductive if anything. [00:55]
asciilifeform their opponents, if too vocal and not independently wealthy - face starvation. [00:55]
mircea_popescu this is exactly their problem, that they want for nothing. [00:55]
mircea_popescu nothing easier to rape. [00:55]
mircea_popescu let the sinecure become a central point of the progressive - sane person debate. [00:56]
mircea_popescu that's already defeat, for them. [00:56]
asciilifeform is it not already the case ? [00:56]
mircea_popescu not amply enough. [00:56]
decimation the trouble is that nearly everyone in the us is one some dole or another [00:56]

decimation lol let the beatings commence [01:55]
mircea_popescu anyway, the guy has a point , and that point is : the expectations of us citizens, and their self valuations, are wildly divergent from reality. [01:56]
mircea_popescu they will have to be brought back on their knees somehow [01:56]
asciilifeform wait, they expect something ? [01:56]
mircea_popescu and no government yet has had the audacity to go to a group of self impressed idiots and tell them the sort of thing i say [01:56]
mircea_popescu "shut the fuck up, get on your knees and suck more cock" [01:56]
mircea_popescu consequently, inflation is necessary and unavoidable. [01:56]
mircea_popescu it's roughly the "put pitbull in doorframe and slam door on him" educational tactic. [01:56]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform yes. for instance : they expect to not have to find someone to be the sex slave of. [01:57]
mircea_popescu further : they expect to warm their abode artificially. [01:57]
mircea_popescu further still : they expect to not have to do hard physical labour. [01:57]
mircea_popescu and on it goes. [01:57]
mircea_popescu none of these are warranted. not really. [01:58]
asciilifeform even expect not to ferment as biodiesel, if you believe. [01:58]
mircea_popescu that one i can see. [01:58]
* asciilifeform does expect, however [01:58]
mircea_popescu human biodiesel is actually uneconomical. [01:58]
mircea_popescu do the math, of what's the cost per calorie to fatten a woman [01:58]
asciilifeform very economical in the broad sense (sealed mine) [01:58]
mircea_popescu then see what you could get, per calorie, as biodiesel. [01:58]
asciilifeform but you, the farmer, did not fatten her [01:58]
asciilifeform she fattened 'free range.' [01:58]
mircea_popescu so then i stole her ? [01:58]
asciilifeform hunted. [01:58]
mircea_popescu mno. economics is a science of closed systems. [01:59]
asciilifeform what are mineral resources then. [01:59]
mircea_popescu this is why i am not in principle opposed to ecology. [01:59]
decimation I thought the point of the biodiesiel was to encourage the others [01:59]
mircea_popescu just to the idiotic parts thereof. [01:59]
asciilifeform pretty much the whole shebang runs on exquisitely non-renewable stuff [01:59]
mircea_popescu decimation then it's necessarily fractionary. [01:59]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform this is a good objection. which is why i'm not fixated on ecology. [02:00]
asciilifeform nobody but chromosomally damaged midwestern usians imagines that closed cycle biodiesel is +ev. but it remains that something will have to be done with the... biomass. [02:01]
decimation fractionary << yes, ferment one, educate 1000 (at the fuel pump!) [02:01]
mircea_popescu decimation but then you'ver just shown why they'd rightfully not expect to be biodisel'd. 1 in 1000 shot. [02:02]

asciilifeform although there are interesting 'demo' cases. i once saw a set of photographs of a 'work of art' - a small coffee table, with a bioreactor. a lure of some electronic kind (acoustic?) led mice up a hollow leg and into the reactor. there, they would ferment, and charge a battery that would run the next iteration of the mouse-lift-zap-ferment cycle. mircea_popescu check out dooglus (who isn't a gavin-approved economist, in spite of being exactly as certified&educated in the topic as the random idiots a la Oleg Andreev et all) explaining economics : [13:46]
mircea_popescu At any given time there is a certain amount of demand for a Bitcoin like currency to make transactions. That need doesn’t increase with more competition. That means that the transactional demand for Bitcoin is really the same as the transactional demand for all substantially similar forms of payment. As more currencies are competing to fill the same demand they actually reduce the demand for the other currencies as t [13:46]
mircea_popescu hey become more widely used. [13:46]
mircea_popescu This means that ultimately, to the extent that currencies are interchangeable to end users, merged mining does not increase the overall security of the networks. The demand for currencies drives the price (and thus the value of the reward). Increased demand for any given currency results in decreased demand for others, lowering the incentive to mine for the other currencies. The total incentive is a function of total d [13:46]
mircea_popescu emand for all Bitcoin like currencies. [13:46]
mircea_popescu Except now competing currencies can market themselves as “as secure as Bitcoin but with lower transaction fees.” In other words there is a race to the bottom among competing currencies to offer the lowest transaction fees, because lowering the transaction fee doesn’t hurt the security of the network in comparison to the other merged mining networks. Users, following their own self interest, will adopt the currenc [13:46]
mircea_popescu y with the lowest transaction fees as long as it has the same security of the competitors. [13:46]
mircea_popescu This will increase the price of the currency with the lowest transaction fee (because demand for the currency is higher), and decrease the price of the currencies with higher transactions fees (because demand for those currencies is dropping as it is being filled by demand for the competing currency). Because the currencies with the higher transaction fees were the ones generating the incentive to mine, overall incenti [13:46]
mircea_popescu ve to mine will diminish. As long as a currency’s mining is merged with the freeloading currency, it will be powerless to increase incentives by imposing mandatory transaction fees. [13:46]
mircea_popescu The result will be a decrease in mining incentive, a decrease in mining, and ultimately all networks that allow merged mining will become insecure. [13:46]
davout so, if i understand correctly, the way this thing works is that it attracts moar miners through the bonus mechanism, which in turn contributes to killing-off gavincoin amirite [13:46]

mircea_popescu davout yeh i am surrendered, merging doesn't work like i thought it would. [14:02]
* assbot gives voice to Adlai [14:04]
mircea_popescu davout http://trilema.com/2015/rfc-the-gavin-assassinsen-memorial-mining-pool-implementation/ there you go, degraded to rfc. [14:04]
assbot [RFC] The Gavin Assassinsen Memorial Mining Pool Implementation pe Trilema - Un blog de Mircea Popescu. ... ( http://bit.ly/1zrL3uu ) [14:04]
davout if you remove 1. then mining gavincoin blocks can be removed from the rfc as well [14:06]
mircea_popescu the principal utility of this thing is to guarantee the general public the ability to split its coins on the two chains [14:07]
davout so if i understand correctly, the main characteristic you want for this pool, is that it prioritizes double-spends of already-confirmed gavincoins when picking which txes to put in its blocks [14:08]
davout s/gavincoins/gavincoin txes/ [14:09]
mircea_popescu something like that [14:09]
mircea_popescu actually you're right huh, it doesn't need to be trustless and that "send to pool" step is gunk. [14:09]
mircea_popescu it *could* just look for dblspent txs that made it on gavinchain and prioritize them [14:10]
davout yep [14:10]
mircea_popescu course, this is not actually needed either. miners already do that, in that they look for high tx fee txn [14:10]
mircea_popescu maybe this entire pool thing actually just needs to be a website to generate raw tx for people to put in bitcoind [14:10]
mircea_popescu like a graphics aid. [14:11]
davout also, i think that if what you want to achieve is a bitcoin separator, the easiest way is simply to acquire a satoshi from eligius and use it on the input side of a transaction [14:11]
mircea_popescu im not happy with waiting the 200 blocks for the scamcoins to mature. [14:12]
mircea_popescu that sort of latency means you'll be a late comer to the "sell it into the dirt" party. [14:12]
davout since eligius pays directly from the coinbase you're guaranteed to receive a payout that's spendable on one chain but not on the other [14:12]
mircea_popescu but also guaranteed to receive it too late. [14:12]

BingoBoingo But part of the deedbot appeal is also hosting the deeds as a stronger pastebin/dpaste alternative. [14:30]

Apocalyptic aha, I get it [14:37]
mircea_popescu the notary keeps a list of all the items it was sent a certain way. [14:37]
mircea_popescu you're free to sign whatever matter a similar way, but it won't be thus notarized. it will just be your own mock-up of the process. [14:37]
mircea_popescu which is fine, but as far as i see toothless. [14:37]
davout well, in that case it doesn't really make sense to me that the notary doesn't GPG-sign [14:37]
Apocalyptic the content has to be made public and witnessed by others at the time it's timestamped [14:37]
mircea_popescu it does make sense. because the trust does not derive from a robotic application of a gpg seal. [14:38]
mircea_popescu anyway, i got a meeting, we'll have to continue this debte in a few hours. [14:38]
davout more from the fact that folks you trust are looking at deeds being timestamped [14:38]
davout amirite [14:39]
davout also there was another thing regarding deedbot, if all deeds are simply concatenated before being hashed into a bitcoin private key, that means anyone watching the process taking place can deduce the bitcoin private key that's going to be generated, and claim the coins that'll be sent there [14:40]

pete_dushenski same as that owned by gorbachev and hussein [22:46]
pete_dushenski good company, that [22:46]
asciilifeform pete_dushenski: i can't comment on whether gorby owns one, but the photo is clearly on a wash, d.c street [22:46]
asciilifeform pete_dushenski: i don't think he keeps it here. [22:46]
mircea_popescu lol [22:46]
asciilifeform md plates, too [22:47]
asciilifeform (state of maryland) [22:47]
pete_dushenski ha [22:47]
asciilifeform probably rental. [22:47]
pete_dushenski well the story is that he drove one on his first visit to the us [22:47]
pete_dushenski fell in love with it [22:47]
pete_dushenski and ordered a bullet-proof model, naturally, as soon as he returned to moscow [22:47]
asciilifeform iirc that one was auctioned recently ? [22:48]
asciilifeform or was that his 'zil' [22:48]
pete_dushenski hm i missed said auction [22:48]
asciilifeform lol, would have bought it ? [22:48]
pete_dushenski for the right price, i'll buy anything. [22:48]
asciilifeform for an even righter price i'll also buy anything. [22:49]
pete_dushenski you would undercut me, wouldn't you. [22:49]
asciilifeform neh, the street bum who bids a penny will undercut. [22:50]
asciilifeform all of us. [22:50]
asciilifeform (how does this work exactly.) [22:50]
pete_dushenski lol it doesn't [22:50]
asciilifeform but yes, congrats. vroom. [22:50]
asciilifeform does that thing run on ordinary petrol? [22:50]
pete_dushenski cheers [22:50]
pete_dushenski oh ya, inordinate amounts of it [22:50]
mircea_popescu http://cdn.collarspace.com/photos/2179295.jpg << lol nothing like a blonde girl with black eyebrows and landing strip. [22:51]
* starsoccer has quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds) [22:51]
pete_dushenski not sure i would've sprung for it had gas been $1.2/L [22:51]
assbot ... ( http://bit.ly/1B9Ne3L ) [22:51]
pete_dushenski i don't think i'll eke out 400 km of city driving on a 90l tank [22:51]
pete_dushenski probably more like 600-700km on the highway [22:51]
asciilifeform good car for fellow who doesn't drive. [22:51]
mircea_popescu tank isn't that big if memory serves, more like 52, and fuel economy is not that bad, more like 7ish [22:52]
mircea_popescu so you'd do ~500 km on the 50 liters in the tank [22:52]
pete_dushenski i drive about 5000km a year so almost "doesn't drive" [22:52]
mircea_popescu *700 [22:52]
pete_dushenski "23.8-gallon fuel tank" [22:53]
mircea_popescu http://www.toothycat.net/~hologram/Turing/HowItWorks.html << this person does NOT understand what "turing complete" means. [22:53]
assbot Magic: the Gathering is Turing Complete ... ( http://bit.ly/1B9NuzL ) [22:53]
mircea_popescu apparently a sack of 20 different apples is "turing complete" if you provide the turing completeness separately [22:54]
mircea_popescu and allocate the apples to machine states or sumthin [22:54]
asciilifeform separately ? [22:54]
pete_dushenski mircea_popescu you're probably thinking of the 300 sel, if not one of the diesels [22:55]
asciilifeform seems like the question re: the linked article is, can one have the card players compute an arbitrary function (without them knowing) by having them play out a certain position [22:55]
asciilifeform seems like it purports to show that - yes [22:55]
* asciilifeform has not checked the proof, just saw this turd [22:55]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform what he does is, "here's a turing machine, and here's how im painting my game on it. " [22:55]
mircea_popescu pete_dushenski i was thinking of teh diesel. [22:55]
mircea_popescu this is gas ?! [22:55]
pete_dushenski you thought it was a 5.6l diesel? [22:56]
pete_dushenski it's not a 3/4 ton pickup [22:56]
pete_dushenski lol ya it's gas [22:56]
mircea_popescu yeah those had shitty fuel economy. [22:57]
mircea_popescu back in the 90s the diesels were pretty economical cause diesel was 30% off [22:57]
pete_dushenski now diesel is all over the place [22:58]
pete_dushenski often 30% more [22:58]
pete_dushenski plus, quite underpowered and they never heat up in the winter [22:58]
pete_dushenski not enough waste heat [22:58]
pete_dushenski though the diesels are known to last 1,000,000 miles [22:59]
mircea_popescu hm, nah, it'll heat alright [22:59]
pete_dushenski at -30C it'll take a while [23:00]
pete_dushenski by which time you're probably already at your destination [23:01]
pete_dushenski could take 30 min [23:01]
mircea_popescu ah yes, i guess that's a point. [23:01]
mircea_popescu doesn't get that cold in yurp [23:01]
pete_dushenski ya, it's an entirely canadian consideration [23:02]
pete_dushenski as is traction in snow, etc. [23:02]
ben_vulpes it's not a 3/4 ton pickup << lol [23:03]
ben_vulpes nice acquisition, pete_dushenski [23:03]
mircea_popescu "Nos numerus sumus et fruges consumere nati." [23:04]
pete_dushenski not too shabby eh [23:04]
mircea_popescu "we are statistics, born to consume resources." [23:04]
ben_vulpes imma put lady v in a mercedes baby wagon here sometime [23:04]
ben_vulpes you know [23:04]
ben_vulpes the long ones [23:04]
ben_vulpes hearses [23:04]
mircea_popescu get a volvo while at it [23:04]
pete_dushenski glk ? e-something ? [23:04]
mircea_popescu and weld them top to top [23:04]
pete_dushenski i think top gear did that welding game once [23:04]
pete_dushenski ben_vulpes so when's this baby of yours due ? we've been hearing about it since, what, you tried to use it as an excuse to not go to the third conference ? [23:06]
pete_dushenski we want to send you toys! [23:07]
ben_vulpes pete_dushenski: i'm going to the third conference, foo [23:07]
pete_dushenski well now you are... [23:07]
ben_vulpes you see the girl's sister's wedding is important enough to shift babymaking around, but not con3 [23:07]
ben_vulpes but can't really say yo [23:08]

pete_dushenski it's not like lady v is 35yo and it's crazy crunch time [23:11]
pete_dushenski might as well enjoy these final months/years of peaceful sleep [23:11]
pete_dushenski and dink life [23:11]
ben_vulpes dink < meh [23:16]
ben_vulpes perhaps you missed the part of the log where i disclosed that lady v is on my personal payroll [23:17]
pete_dushenski i guess it depends whether your personal payroll includes personal cheques or just payments in kind ;) [23:19]
ben_vulpes personal cheques would defeat the purpose; then i'd have to pay taxes on money i'd already have paid taxes on. [23:21]
asciilifeform what's it mean to have a pet on payroll even. [23:22]

mats handbags. [23:25]
asciilifeform spambags ? [23:25]
kakobrekla to bring in food. at least in my case. [23:26]
* asciilifeform almost failed to read 'handbags' because it lodged in his skullcase's spam filter [23:26]
* kakobrekla hates going to the store. [23:26]

ben_vulpes yeah well there you go [23:27]
ben_vulpes mine has her own [23:27]
ben_vulpes and does the cooking too [23:27]
asciilifeform cooking - yes [23:27]
ben_vulpes easily delegable all sorts of household tasks [23:27]
ben_vulpes girl basically runs the household [23:29]
ben_vulpes no reason to not provide adequate expense accounts to ensure everything gets done [23:29]
ben_vulpes wait - skullcase? [23:29]
ben_vulpes nm. [23:29]
kakobrekla here you dont need a car to go to the store. [23:30]
asciilifeform ben_vulpes: srsly, how often does one see word 'handbag' outside of spam. [23:30]
kakobrekla actually it would take longer with the car than by foot. [23:30]
asciilifeform kakobrekla: the only thing one can reliably get to where i live, without a motor, is 'convenience stores' which largely sell recycled food [23:31]

Like "Search" or "Category" (without the message "Well this is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it?")? This page is very useful because it shows the categories and the search.
