pete_dushenski mircea_popescu: the idea is for people to be able to go "i support the bitcoin foundation" and for derps to go oh, this thing ? and for people to lol superiorly at their cluelessness. << fwiw i can see it. [00:06]
jurov options between x.eur/mpexbtc are doable. but no one is willing to put his balls into there [00:07]

mircea_popescu methinks amend takes one m [00:08]
mircea_popescu otherwise seems pretty cool. [00:08]
mircea_popescu shouldn't have something about budget ? [00:08]
ben_vulpes charter first, budget later [00:09]
ben_vulpes if there's a budget, something can be said about it [00:09]
mircea_popescu a promise should be made for accounts publishing at the least [00:10]

cazalla i mean, i could masquerade of having some understanding and write something up but i'd rather not [00:46]
asciilifeform not by magic [00:46]
asciilifeform but seems like posix diff is actually retarded, and cannot operate on file system basis at all, but only by lines! [00:47]
mircea_popescu diff only works by line. [00:47]
mircea_popescu there's some derivatives tho iirc. [00:47]
asciilifeform thought so. [00:47]
asciilifeform ben_vulpes, mircea_popescu, others: you must appreciate why this is necessary. it is direly important. our patch set must start with a known, traditional tree, and end with the end product. [00:47]
asciilifeform no manual monkey business, nothing specified 'in human language' other than 'run this like so.' [00:47]
asciilifeform or no sane man with skin in the game will use it. [00:48]
asciilifeform pedigree. [00:48]
mircea_popescu i don't dispute its important [00:48]
mircea_popescu im bemused by your apparent expectation for it to be easy [00:48]
asciilifeform did not expect easy. in fact, undertook this exercise partly from ulterior motive to demonstrate the sheer amount of braindamage. [00:49]
asciilifeform i want people to see what i spoke of when said 'cannot polish turd' [00:49]
asciilifeform on their own hides. [00:49]
asciilifeform 'flush_turds.sh' it is. [00:50]
asciilifeform until someone suggests alternative. [00:50]
ben_vulpes nope. [00:51]
asciilifeform incidentally, there's a larger lesson here. folks have been using 'version control' gizmos for so long, that approximately no one even notices that 'diff' is broken. [00:51]
asciilifeform don't believe? search the net. [00:51]
asciilifeform no complaints whatsoever, that i was able to find, about deleting bins. [00:51]

asciilifeform ...and? [00:56]
ben_vulpes along with database passwords [00:56]
asciilifeform what do the diffs end up looking like? [00:56]
ben_vulpes horrible. [00:56]
ben_vulpes people committing binaries are also using Github or other tools that paper over the horror. [00:57]
asciilifeform try to appreciate how i got here. i want --short-- diffs. [00:57]
asciilifeform that you, i, mircea_popescu, putin, whoever, can read. [00:57]
asciilifeform as in, actually read. [00:57]
asciilifeform short as in - not much more than levenshtein distance between the trees. [00:57]
asciilifeform if we have a meg of extraneous turd in a diff, then we're in 'infinity' in the one, two, three, infinity hierarchy of being. [00:59]
asciilifeform of weight. [00:59]
asciilifeform meaning, does not fit in head. [00:59]

PeterL ah, I see it now, there should be a number between the at and comma, 1% per month? [04:31]
mircea_popescu ah yea [04:31]
mircea_popescu course i think the most interesting thing in there will be the nonlinear effects due to the numerous feedback loops. [04:32]
PeterL other than that, does the analysis make sense? [04:32]
mircea_popescu for instance : the more popular/relevant/powerful it becomes, the more likely it is to attract share buyers, authors and income. all three. [04:32]
mircea_popescu but two work one way, the third the other way [04:32]
mircea_popescu it does yes. [04:32]
PeterL feedback loops make it hard to get a good number for the future [04:33]
mircea_popescu anyway, i think as designed this share price is eminently modelable, to great modelling benefits [04:33]
mircea_popescu will obviously be a lot more interesting to work on a history than trying nude predictions [04:34]
PeterL designed or not designed? [04:34]
mircea_popescu hm ? [04:35]
PeterL did they design the price or just leave out design and let it fall where it may? [04:36]

mircea_popescu no but seriously, and somewhat from experience : while the serial thing is a solid design, i suspect it's also a bridge too far [07:05]
mircea_popescu prolly a better idea to keep things sane and incrementally improve ? [07:05]
mod6 that's plausibly only 8 weeks out. and we'd better have something to run by then. i don't wanna be chasing crazy changes down when we could have just gotten something simple running first. [07:05]

mircea_popescu asciilifeform well the discussion is if the json-rpc part is in the obvious crud or in the eventual crud group [07:07]

asciilifeform (not the ecdsa calls - well, them too, ought to be redone - but the https idiocy. needs to go.) [07:08]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform how about this for a principle : step 1, take all the stuff that can be taken out without therefore forcing different stuff being put in ; step 2 take out the stuff that needs replacement, sorted by the complexity of the needed replacement, ascending. [07:09]
asciilifeform that was my suggestion [07:09]
asciilifeform from the start [07:09]
mod6 you have some great ideas about changes that need to be made. and I really do think we'll get to doing them. bitcoin will be better for it. [07:09]

mod6 see, im of the opinion that we don't cut out anything. first we add. [07:10]
asciilifeform add what ? [07:10]
mircea_popescu i'm the first to say that the only practicable way to run this is as a two machine, serial connected thing, so that's not changing. [07:11]
mod6 we add patches from stuff up to 6.3 [07:11]
mircea_popescu oh he has a point. step 0 : merge the stuff that's acxtually useful in. [07:11]
asciilifeform like what ? [07:11]
mod6 then once we have our baseline... something that can be used, and we can feel pretty good about with not years worth of testing, then we start to implement these major changes. then we see the UI go away from core, the rpc commands, etc. [07:11]

mircea_popescu you can print just as well. [08:48]
asciilifeform can. [08:49]
asciilifeform really belongs as a piped apparatus though [08:49]
mircea_popescu the advantage of this arrangement is that it can be made easily and inconspicuously. [08:50]
* asciilifeform isn't thrilled with the encouragement of exposing privkeys to the atmosphere, so to speak, by trivial optical export [08:50]
mircea_popescu nobody's encouraging it. as long as it's there, people gotta keep tempest going. [08:50]
mircea_popescu this is expensive. let them. [08:50]
asciilifeform mircea_popescu: you really think it's still done with a van full of knob-twiddling sp00kz0rz ? [08:51]
mircea_popescu however it's done, it's still expensive and scales poorly. [08:51]
asciilifeform done with automatics, usable by chimp, approx. the size of iPnohe (minus receiving horn) [08:51]

mircea_popescu how much do you figure it cost ? [08:52]
asciilifeform it was announced with some fanfare, too. (who has the balloon link?) [08:52]
asciilifeform no idea what it costs, other than the fact usg can get as many of these as it likes. [08:53]
* assbot removes voice from britter [08:53]
* kermit (unknown@pdpc/supporter/bronze/kermit) has joined #bitcoin-assets [08:53]
asciilifeform back to qr codes per se: who builds the reader with no stateful internals? [08:54]
asciilifeform every single one i've ripped open, had a micro [08:54]
asciilifeform if going for optical, better keep it edisonian. as in, helically-inscribed 1d barcode. [08:54]
mircea_popescu i guess. [08:55]
asciilifeform then can read a la phonograph. [08:55]
asciilifeform print - with ordinary printer. [08:55]
* asciilifeform wonders if anyone has returned to paper tape [08:57]
asciilifeform or if it will have to wait for mechanicoin. [08:57]
* HeySteve (~DinoSaw@41-133-151-133.dsl.mweb.co.za) has joined #bitcoin-assets [08:57]

asciilifeform and wai wat, who ever said tempest needs to scale. [08:59]
asciilifeform there's maybe 10 worthwhile 'patients' alive. [08:59]
asciilifeform and 3-5 of them are reading log here. [08:59]
mircea_popescu you don't understand how bureaucracy works :) [09:01]
asciilifeform tempest horn doesn't have to belong to the crown. [09:01]

decimation I was confused, I thought you had a pre-patch and post patch manifest [18:53]
decimation instead you had a pre-patch and pre-patch cut :) [18:53]
decimation at any rate, I got it compiled and working, immediately began downloading blocks [18:55]
decimation one item of note - it is amusing that the copyright notices suddenly changed from "Satoshi Nakamoto" to "The Bitcoin Developers" [18:56]
decimation like, is that a legal entity? [18:56]
asciilifeform decimation: the patch removed crap that was ifdef'd out anyway [18:56]
decimation yeah I noted that [18:56]
mircea_popescu decimation because that's how maggots become cattle owners. [18:57]
mircea_popescu it's... their corpse, right ? [18:57]
asciilifeform decimation: i haven't any idea what 'the bitcoin developers' are. presumably it's a mythical set that includes, even us. [18:57]
decimation heh that's what I thought [18:57]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform just like "us representatives" as a mythical set includes even you. [18:57]
asciilifeform lelz [18:57]
asciilifeform let's change that string to 'bitcoin maggots' [18:57]
mircea_popescu let's just change it to what it originally was. [18:58]
mircea_popescu kinda the point of the fucking reaction innit. [18:58]
decimation yeah, I would revert it all to satoshi [18:58]
* asciilifeform looks at 0.1 [18:58]
asciilifeform satoshi '09 ? [18:59]
mircea_popescu then qntra can run a piece about how bitcoin foundation reverted a missatribution created by usgavin of the bitcoin scamdation, where it falsely attrivbuted bitcoin to an inexistent group instead of satoshi [18:59]
decimation yep [18:59]
asciilifeform sorta misleading, considering that the turdball presently under consideration isn't maggot-free [18:59]
decimation yeah it's a bit early [19:00]
decimation but I like the sentiment [19:00]
mircea_popescu yeah not yet, just, best way to publicly announce this. [19:00]
decimation asciilifeform: did you see this http://cryptome.org/2014/10/3-us-section.pdf [19:01]
decimation an interesting history of the real details of how comint was shared by the allies [19:02]
* assbot removes voice from Mikayla [19:03]
decimation Hut-3 and 3-US was the US liason hut at Bletchley Park: [19:05]
decimation "Much that went on in 3-US was not properly the business of Hut 3. Such questions, for example, as which individuals at American commands should be entitled to have access to Ultra, or what action should be taken on violations of security regulations at American commands-questions which on the British side were handled at Broadway Buildings-were normally handled in 3-US." [19:05]
decimation so basically there was a whole pile of people who appeared-to-be-in-charge who were not, and security was effective because a small number were involved [19:05]

I had a few scary encounters, and ended up carrying a stun gun at that point. The security gaurds could escort you only so far off the property too, so you just had to be on gaurd.. [21:18]
mircea_popescu course the bitch of all time is that young women are exactly at an age when they're simultaneously a) unclear as to what they actually want and b) attractive. pretty much everyting about living things is made out of bottlenecks like that. [21:18]
Mikayla my fear of a weapon like a stun gun is that it gets used on me [21:18]
mircea_popescu Mikayla well, strong muscular contractions. sex toy basically. [21:18]
Mikayla lol [21:19]

Mikayla um... [21:19]
Mikayla I spit on your grave 2 [21:19]
PinkPosixPXE Yea, any weapon you carry can be used against you, it's an important thing to be mindful of, that's where the training to use it, and learn some self defense tactics comes in. [21:19]
mircea_popescu undata what do you thing slavegirls wear dog collars for :D [21:19]
Mikayla at least with a gun the first shot has a major impact and quick [21:19]
undata mircea_popescu: in the case of the stun gun, you might get a little zap yourself [21:19]
PinkPosixPXE I'm very small, so someone's always going to have a natural advantage, strength wise. [21:19]

mircea_popescu Mikayla what's norm mean ? like, every 3yo you know got raped ? [21:21]

Mikayla undata different reasons. Some believe having sex with a virgin cures age [21:22]
mircea_popescu Mikayla yes but what's a lot mean. [21:22]
mircea_popescu having sex with a virgin does not cure age. [21:22]
Mikayla mircea_popescu a baby is raped or killed every 3 seconds in Africa [21:22]
mircea_popescu having sex with a teenager cures age. and she'd better not be a virgin. [21:22]

undata Mikayla: govt ones? [21:23]
mircea_popescu published by whom ? [21:23]
Mikayla mircea_popescu reported crimes [21:23]
Mikayla nevermind those not reported... [21:23]
mircea_popescu to make perfectly clear, my issue here is this : if one knows (from the news) that a) X event happens and b) (the news) isn't reporting it frequently enough and c) )(other parties) aren't taking enough action, [21:24]
Mikayla "The rate of sexual violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world. Sexual violence is the use of force or manipulation to get someone to engage in unwanted sexual activity without his or her consent.[1] An estimated of 500,000 rape cases take place in the country, every year.[" [21:24]
mircea_popescu this situation could be indicative of X not actually happening. [21:24]
Mikayla that's reported - which many aren't [21:24]
PinkPosixPXE mircea_popescu: yea, hehe, that's sort of how the nick evolved. Friends call me a variety of things like 'tinkerbell' etc. [21:24]
mircea_popescu Mikayla "an estimated" is not "a reported". [21:24]
undata it is true; it's important to avoid hysteria [21:24]
Mikayla they go on police reported numbers [21:24]
Mikayla I've been on the police website and seen the increases [21:24]
Mikayla it goes into multiple 100%'s a year [21:24]
mircea_popescu now, i know about this hysteria first hand, because some of the safest places i;'ve ever been in are convinced hteir problem is "security" [21:24]

* asciilifeform wonders if this escapade will progress much faster than one could reasonably expect, on account of people like jurov, mircea_popescu, ben_vulpes - who actually use bitcoin 'in anger' - succumbing to the temptation to release some of their secret mods. [23:51]
ben_vulpes i doubt it, but who can ever tell. [23:51]
jurov sadly no secret mods here. my wet dreams are dedicated to haskoin [23:51]
asciilifeform well - the spittoon is here. shiny, new, brass. spit away, gentlemen. [23:52]
jurov but i consider this effor immensely useful [23:52]
nubbins` asciilifeform what's the current line count? [23:52]
asciilifeform find b/ -xtype f -print0 | xargs -0 wc -l [23:54]
asciilifeform 26321 total. [23:54]
asciilifeform includes various junk though. [23:54]
* assbot gives voice to TheNewDeal [23:54]
TheNewDeal in reference to the talk about nail guns before, they would definitely be useful as a weapon for inflicting fatal wounds, and they can be purchased at your local hardware store. my opinion [23:54]
asciilifeform nubbins` et al can easily answer questions like that on his own [23:54]
undata https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2k9v8q/givedirectly_claims_aid_system_is_broken_and_the/ << LOOOL advocating giving bitcoin to the poor [23:55]
assbot GiveDirectly claims Aid system is broken and the most efficient aid system is ... giving direct cash to the poor using *new technology* . Should we mail them? : Bitcoin [23:55]
undata and they will spend it how? [23:55]
nubbins` too true :/ [23:55]
jurov give them microscopes! [23:56]
undata maybe paper wallets provided there's anywhere to spend one in person (there isn't) [23:56]
nubbins` that's actually not bad, only ~425 pages [23:56]
cazalla TheNewDeal, you know that's not even an option here for if you used it on an intruder, you would need to explain "legitimate use" for keeping a nailgun next to your bed or in bedroom [23:56]
asciilifeform nubbins`: most of that crud really does not belong on a printed page. [23:56]
nubbins` budgeting 60 lines per page as a rough guide [23:56]
nubbins` nod [23:57]
TheNewDeal that's not what the talk was about [23:57]
asciilifeform cazalla: nailgun does not have a barrel in the usual sense. [23:57]
undata TheNewDeal: sure fatal wounds but if you're offing yourself, aren't there quicker ways? [23:57]
undata nailgun seems like a good way to bleed out slowly [23:57]
TheNewDeal it was speculation on a banker killing himself with a nail gun [23:57]
asciilifeform not really useful other than against self or a hogtied 'client' [23:57]
nubbins` cazalla so rip a hole in your wall [23:57]
TheNewDeal nubbins` so practical... [23:57]
undata or you just end up this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage [23:57]
nubbins` dude do you even reno [23:57]
assbot Phineas Gage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia [23:57]
undata and that was with a railroad spike [23:58]
TheNewDeal you could shoot yourself in the head and end up like gage too [23:58]
TheNewDeal but is it likely [23:58]
asciilifeform there's a moderately-well-documented case of a (small caliber) pistol lobotomy. [23:58]
undata asciilifeform: my stepdad used to fly medevac helicopters, saw more than a couple botched suicides that merely blew off the person's face [23:59]
asciilifeform ah those are SOP [23:59]

Fixed. The problem appears to have been caused by some stray pre tags inside the body fucking up the display ; otherwise the item was "there" from a db pov.
