mp_en_viaje: http://trilema.com/forum-logs-for-20-apr-2019#2531235 << what specific versions are involved ? [07:20]
a111: Logged on 2019-04-20 19:59 billymg: anyway, i updated php on my server to include gd and it indeed works fine. so for now the latest patch for mp-wp is the one i personally recommend/support [07:20]
mp_en_viaje: i mean, functionality in question exists on trilema server since 2008 as such. [07:21]
mp_en_viaje: did they regress meanwhile or what happened ? [07:21]
billymg: mp_en_viaje: 5.6.36 on my local and 5.6.38 on the server. but it wasn't because of the php version, it had to do with the "gd" library being included or not. i.e. when i emerged php on the server gd wasn't in the use flags, so it wasn't included [07:56]
mp_en_viaje: a a a [07:56]
mp_en_viaje: yeah that makes more sense. [07:56]
mp_en_viaje: i suppose gd should go on the requirements list. [07:56]
billymg: yep yep, esthlos' guide explicitly mentions including mysql, apache2 in the use flags for php (my post mentioned neither as it somewhat relied on esthlos' as the base) [08:00]
billymg: been meaning to make some tweaks to my mp-wp guide and will include that update [08:00]
mp_en_viaje: aha. [08:00]
* mp_en_viaje is working on a mega travel article, in other news. [08:01]
billymg: i need a vacation too, but next up for me is escape from ny, which i'm perhaps looking forward to even more [08:04]
billymg: so, relatedly, may be mia for a few weeks coming up before logging back on from trinque/ben_vulpes country [08:08]
mp_en_viaje: new york's such a sad story [08:10]
mp_en_viaje: it was great, perhaps the greates tcity in the world, at some point. [08:10]
mp_en_viaje: it's been going to shit ever since. definitely ever since the 70s, which is as far as my directly-mediated experience reaches but i suspect downward movement started much earlier. with lincoln's victory against america, perhaps. [08:11]
billymg: it was already full disneyified when i arrived circa 2010, but my eyes weren't yet open and i still saw it as this infinite place compressed into a few hundred square miles [08:14]
billymg: fully* [08:14]
billymg: it was only after bitcoin that it started feeling more like a prison with decent room service than anything else [08:15]
* billymg wishes he could've been around for the ny mp_en_viaje speaks of [08:16]
mp_en_viaje: the problem with the room service is that it's only decent if you never had anything else much like prison food. and pretty expensive at that. [08:17]
billymg: true [08:18]
mp_en_viaje: pre-giuliani ny was almost still passible though the people who still recalled the borscth belt as personal experience likely wouldnt have agreed [08:18]
billymg: i came originally from small town usa, so ny was my first city experience [08:27]
mp_en_viaje: myeah. in this sense, experience is the enemy of contentment. [08:27]
billymg: as in, having experienced city, however consumerized, difficult to be content in "small tonw [08:30]
billymg: town" [08:30]
billymg: sorry, meant that as a question before fingers slipped on the keys [08:32]
mp_en_viaje: as in, country bumpkin will be impressed by akron. the mechanism of the impressing's not akron, but bumpkin even though self-loving like all derps, the bumpkin assigns it to akron. [08:36]
mp_en_viaje: then if he goes on to pittsburg, becomes less impressed by akron, and then on to new york and even less impressed by either p or a and then on to whatever, europe, where they have sane heating and sane window systems and no town in the us can ever satisfy again, becasuse why would these morons use wrong windows omfg wtf is wrong with people. and so on and so following. [08:38]
mp_en_viaje: i don't know that every single window you've yet interacted with is only fit for burning, because how would you. yet it's true. [08:38]
mp_en_viaje: you don't know* i mean. [08:40]
billymg: ah [08:40]
mp_en_viaje: the more you see, the more you like, the more you like, the less likely it becomes it can all be piled in the same place. thus experience is the enemy of contentment.\ [08:41]
mp_en_viaje: tokyo has 5 star hotels without bathtubs. boston has 5 star hotels without bidets. dubai managed to have both at some point. and so on. [08:43]

billymg: but does one, at the point of experiencing most of what the world has to offer in terms of material comforts, eventually lump all of these together and separate them from.. i want to say, "true comforts"? [08:46]
billymg: as in, the more you experience without achieving contentment the more you realize contentment won't come from those things/experiences [08:47]
mp_en_viaje: contentment won't come at all. [08:48]
billymg: nice photos, the bagel with the smoked salmon one is making me hungry [08:51]
mp_en_viaje: they were pretty darned good. [08:52]

BingoBoingo: Not everywhere as in the mumps outbreak last year in the Cowork. As in, bitches be panicking and lining up for vaccination vans. [19:32]
asciilifeform: mumps is merely unpleasant, not usually crippling [19:33]
