mircea_popescu good morning otc [10:25]
vragnaroda mircea_popescu: こんにちは。 [10:25]
mircea_popescu buna sa-ti fie inima voinice. [10:25]
mircea_popescu so i finally took the momentuous decision that no mail originating from yahoo.com can be delivered to polimedia.us [10:27]
mircea_popescu and i encourage everyone to DROP them too. [10:27]
phedny vragnaroda: おはようございます [10:27]
vragnaroda Oh shit, he's speaking that shit at me. [10:29]
mircea_popescu lol [10:29]
vragnaroda I only know a few phrases; leave me alone. [10:29]
mircea_popescu lmao [10:29]
* vragnaroda goes and cries in the corner. [10:29]
mircea_popescu he is just a FAKER you see phedny ! [10:29]
phedny well, I also only know a few phrases, so I'd be glad to keep you alone :) [10:30]
mircea_popescu ahahahaa [10:30]
mircea_popescu oh -otc why do you deliver so! [10:30]
vragnaroda mircea_popescu: It's on my eventual to-learn list and I have the IME but that's about it so far. [10:30]
mircea_popescu well that's something. [10:31]
vragnaroda I chose that one for my greeting because someone in ##japanese is ranting about how he wants to learn to speak to people and doesn't care about reading/writing. [10:31]
vragnaroda I found that incredibly amusing. [10:31]
mod6 hi [10:32]
mod6 :) [10:32]
mircea_popescu heya [10:33]
vragnaroda I mean, how fucking stupid is that? Learn a language as an adult but have no real way of looking shit up because you only care about being able to converse with people? That's just fucking retarded. [10:33]
mircea_popescu vragnaroda : it sounds retarded but practically is how i learned all languages. [10:33]
mircea_popescu that i know i mean. [10:33]
vragnaroda mircea_popescu: I can believe you focused on speaking them but I doubt you approached it with no interest in the written form. [10:34]
mircea_popescu i had plenty of interest, but i first learned to speak fluently [10:35]
mircea_popescu then reading/writing came with very little effort [10:35]
mircea_popescu if you think about it its how native languages are learned too [10:35]
mircea_popescu which also occurs with very little effort [10:35]
* mircea_popescu is a great fan of little effort. [10:35]
vragnaroda Saying native languages are learned with very little effort is like saying foreskin is removed with very little discomfort. [10:35]
phedny learning a language the way native speakers learned is isn't automatically the most efficient way [10:36]
vragnaroda It's certainly better as a child, but that doesn't mean it's easy. The fuck it up *all the time*. [10:36]
vragnaroda *They [10:36]
mircea_popescu well, im not being normative over here [10:36]
mircea_popescu just saying that's what works best for me. [10:36]
phedny in young children, the regions of the brain that are used for reading/writing aren't fully developed yet and also more complex or abstract concepts aren't comprehensible for them [10:37]
phedny mircea_popescu: ah, that might be true :) [10:37]
mircea_popescu phedny im sure im gaining significant advantage from the fact mine are developed, and i can abstract grammar and abstract phonetic representations from speech, which kids can't [10:38]
mircea_popescu however, that doesn't mean allowing all this to work passively isn't the right way to go. [10:38]
vragnaroda mircea_popescu: I also seem to remember you saying that you learned languages because you wanted to screw its native speakers. Being around native speakers is a luxury this asshat doesn't have. He's joining an IRC channel to ask questions about a language he doesn't know how to and doesn't want to learn how to write. [10:38]
mircea_popescu well DOH irc is written. [10:38]
mircea_popescu it is really absurd to want to learn to speak in a written-only medium isnt it. [10:39]
phedny I once joined a French IRC channel when I was learning French [10:39]
mircea_popescu imo irc is a bad way to learn languages, too much diversity. [10:39]
phedny didn't help much.. on IRC people write things differently :) [10:40]
vragnaroda phedny: Did you say “teach me French but not how to write it.”? [10:40]
vragnaroda Well, ##French isn't that bad about it but some other French-language IRC channels are fucking horrible. [10:40]
phedny vragnaroda: actually I didnt' say much, I was first observing and noticing that no grammar rule was followed :) [10:40]
vragnaroda ne0führer's French is like the French equivalent of a cross between rg's English and danieldaniel's English. [10:41]
vragnaroda phedny: lol, yeah [10:41]
vragnaroda mircea_popescu: The other day in #mandarin, someone was trying to argue that Mandarin and Esperanto are very similar grammatically. [10:43]
mircea_popescu mmm [10:43]
mircea_popescu there is this theory that english is very slowly moving towards chinese [10:43]
vragnaroda (They're about as far apart as possible.) [10:43]
mircea_popescu (very slowly in the sense africa is moving towards india very slowly) [10:43]
phedny lol [10:44]
vragnaroda Yes, for an Indo-European language, English tends to be very isolating. [10:44]
mircea_popescu and apparently increeasingly so since ~1800 [10:49]
mircea_popescu i was fascinated by the theory because to be honest modern chinese exists as the result of many thousands years of iterations over a large and diverse group of speakers [10:50]
mircea_popescu which may well resemble the situation of the british empire. [10:50]
mircea_popescu so maybe there's a starcycle of languages too. [10:50]
vragnaroda Well, the more contact with other languages, the simpler the morphology, as a general rule. [10:51]
mircea_popescu http://polimedia.us/trilema/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/muie-yahoo.png [10:51]
mircea_popescu im fed up with those muppets. [10:51]
vragnaroda lol [10:52]
mircea_popescu yahoo mail is possibly the worst microsoft type of thing at the moment. [10:53]
mircea_popescu lmao that language crossing comment was evil. [10:54]
vragnaroda Hmm? [10:54]
mircea_popescu rg isn't that bad really [10:55]
mircea_popescu and daniel i haven't read for months (had him on ignore for a while too) [10:55]
vragnaroda Oh, no, rg's gotten a lot better. [10:56]
mircea_popescu and speaking of rg, check out this shit http://polimedia.us/bitcoin/mpex.php?mpsic=S.BVPS [10:57]
mircea_popescu im gonna retire on his stock or wtf [10:57]
mircea_popescu ok, UX question : would anyone benefit from me making the price digits on MPEx colordegrading ? [11:08]
