benkay apropos only of oddball methods of achieving orbit, this one made me chuckle: you fire your payload directly up into the path of a passing payload-catcher, which opens its payload-catching bay at precisely the right time to accept your payload without losing a terrible amount of the gas in the bay, and closing the door behind the payload. payload compresses gas in intake bay as form of shock absorber. [04:25]
mircea_popescu benkay what if there's nothing to open ? [04:26]
mircea_popescu suppose the receiving end is a magnetite piston. [04:26]
benkay another one i've always found similarly amusing and less idiotic: have a giant sheet of aluminum zipping around up in orbit. lob payload over it, and as payload clears apogee the film goes zipping by underneath. magnets in the payload set up eddy currents in the strip of aluminum, providing the forward oomph to accelerate payload. repeat with several more strips.
