mircea_popescu eurodollars are dollar deposits held in european originally, currently foreign banks. [08:43]
mircea_popescu they're not subject to regulation by the usg. [08:43]
mircea_popescu which is why they trade at a premium over the domestic shit. [08:44]

taub ic [08:44]
benkay what do you mean by "not subject to regulation by the usg"? [08:45]
mircea_popescu exactly that. [08:45]
benkay what regulations does the USG impose upon shitbucks that imposes a penalty relative to eurodollars? [08:46]
benkay impose [08:46]
benkay incur? [08:46]
mircea_popescu for instance you can't send usdollars to "terrorists". [08:47]
mircea_popescu you can however send euro-dollars to anyone you please. [08:47]
benkay by send do you mean via wire transfer to another bank account? or literally pull out box up and post to another human somewhere/. [08:48]
mircea_popescu if i have a bill from my cigar supplier in cuba for 10k usd, i can't use 10k usd from my ny bank account to pay it. i can however use 10k usd from my french bank to pay it just fine. [08:48]
benkay what if you wire 10k from your ny bank? [08:49]
mircea_popescu since the us is a greatly impopular rogue state, the pressure on the currency is marked. [08:49]
mircea_popescu they won't do it. [08:49]
benkay to your french bank? [08:49]
mircea_popescu what of it ? or what are you asking ? [08:50]
benkay can one wire shitbucks to france and from thence on to the terrists? [08:50]
taub once its in the french bank it's an eurodollar [08:50]
mircea_popescu well, im not entirely sure these days how it works. [08:51]
taub mh [08:51]
mircea_popescu it's one of the things the new dodd frank stuff is for. [08:51]
mircea_popescu but it used to be the case. [08:51]
benkay fascinating. where can i see this delta in action? [08:52]
mircea_popescu in the eurodollar futures for instance. [08:52]
* Namworld has quit () [08:54]
mircea_popescu anyway. because the us govt can't be taken seriously, the financial world has settled on the non-us held dollar as the measure of dollars, [08:58]
mircea_popescu and so pretty much all trade taking place with delivery in dollars will reference eurodollars (which really means, non-us dollars) rather than the us-dollars. [08:58]
benkay doesn't really help tho right? if the us prints even more shitbucks even eurodollars are worth less, correct? [08:59]
assbot [HAVELOCK] [XBOND] 5 @ 0.00111 = 0.0056 BTC [-] [09:00]
benkay mircea_popescu: ? [09:01]
* kryptotrader (~kryptotra@50.115.163.119) has joined #bitcoin-assets [09:03]
mircea_popescu benkay well yes, these are distinct items. [09:04]
mircea_popescu inflation is one thing, administrative limitation of the use of your held reserves is another thing. [09:05]
mircea_popescu the reason the eurodollar future is the most traded derivative in the world is due exactly to the fact that people are trying to hedge the inflation part. [09:05]
mircea_popescu it wouldn't work worth a shit if they tried to hedge both parts together, which is why they got separated. this incidentally is how finance works, isolates risks by types much like science isolates variables. [09:08]
* kryptotrader has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds) [09:08]
taub :o [09:08]
mircea_popescu if they hadn't the us govt would simply pretend like there's no inflation, but you just can't spend your dollars sorry. they ARE doing it in any other field where there's no easy recourse, such as for instance employment. [09:08]
taub where did you learn all that btw [09:08]
mircea_popescu well i'm one of the few people in bitcoin that knows finance. [09:09]

mircea_popescu pankkake t'as vu "des pissenlits par la racine" ? [09:11]
benkay how do you hedge the inflation with a shitbuck-denominated asset? [09:12]
mod6 ahh, ok [09:12]
taub yea but where did you learn it [09:13]
mircea_popescu benkay it's one huge concerto of "they're going to be 6 ounces stupid this month" "no, just 5.4" "no really, 6.2" [09:13]
taub just read books or go to uni somewhere? Mp [09:13]
* Transisto (~TransistO@modemcable081.201-160-184.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #bitcoin-assets [09:13]
mircea_popescu all this gets mixed together in the market an a price emerges. [09:13]
mod6 oops. sorry. damn lag. [09:13]
benkay and just what do you mean by "you can't spend your dollars" [09:13]
mircea_popescu taub before bitcoin i was doing business consulting. this isn't the sort of thing books or universities teach, other than in a very basic and fundamentally useless manner. [09:14]
benkay and what are they doing in the employment field that's different from the printing of shutbucks? [09:14]
mircea_popescu benkay well, about 60% of work able adults in the us have a job. the us official unemployment is 10%. [09:14]
mircea_popescu the difference is hidden through administrative means. [09:15]
* Transisto has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer) [09:15]
benkay oh sure [09:15]
mircea_popescu suppose you had 10k in the bank but were not allowed to spend more than 1k a year [09:15]
* Transisto (~TransistO@modemcable081.201-160-184.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #bitcoin-assets [09:15]
mircea_popescu the difference would be hidden [from the market] through administrative menas. [09:15]
mircea_popescu this would prevent prices from going up, as you can't use your supposed dollars. [09:15]
* kryptotrader (~kryptotra@50.115.163.118) has joined #bitcoin-assets [09:15]
taub kk [09:16]
benkay mmmk [09:16]
benkay and what do you mean by six ounces stupid? [09:16]
mircea_popescu print 600tons of bux. no just 500 tons of bux. [09:17]
benkay is this some tie between libor and monetary base inflation? [09:17]
benkay ding ding ding [09:17]
benkay gotcha [09:17]
mircea_popescu obviously inflation is the lowest basic component of any interest rate. [09:17]
mircea_popescu i won't lend to you at 5% if i figure the inflation will be 6% now will i. [09:17]

mircea_popescu lol [09:18]
mircea_popescu anyway. this is the heart of human civilisation, finance. it distributes resources and in the end draws the limit for the lives of everyone. [09:19]
assbot [BTCTC] [DMS.SELLING] 24 @ 0.01315 = 0.3156 BTC [+] [09:19]
mircea_popescu certainly an intellectually rewarding field to try and comprehend. [09:19]
benkay so how would one go about backing out the delta between US- and foreign-held shitbucks from the eurodollar contract? [09:20]
benkay future [09:20]
assbot [BTCTC] [ACTIVEMINING] 1 @ 0.003551 BTC [+] [09:21]
mircea_popescu in a first approximation you could extract something by comparing Ts and eurodollars [09:22]
mircea_popescu ts are promises of the usg to pay usd. eurodollars are promises of foreigners to pay usd. [09:22]
benkay awesome [09:22]
mircea_popescu depends what you;'re ultimately trying to achieve anyway. [09:23]

ice-lolly there was this cool idea, ripple [23:36]
pankkake it's still one of the best ideas to come out of bitcoin [23:36]
ice-lolly which got turned into this shitty thing called ripple nowadays [23:36]
pankkake but hard to actually make use of it; you need the client, a dns resolver, which no easy setup for noobs [23:37]
pankkake with [23:37]
ice-lolly still nice though [23:37]
pankkake I use it to store stuff [23:38]
pankkake like fingerprints [23:39]
Rawted yeah i was a big fan of namecoin too. if a main registrar ever picks up the .bit domains, it could be huge. [23:40]
* Schadenfreude (~m@178.115.129.78.wireless.dyn.drei.com) has joined #bitcoin-assets [23:43]
pankkake namecoin could allow censorship free domains, and eliminate the issue of centralized ssl CAs [23:43]
pankkake right now, any rogue preapproved CA can issue a certificate [23:43]
pankkake so you only need one to make the system useless [23:44]
BigBitz Erm. [23:45]
BigBitz That's FUD. [23:45]
BigBitz and you know it. [23:45]
* virtuals_mr (~virtuals_@85-156-163-10.elisa-mobile.fi) has joined #bitcoin-assets [23:45]
pankkake no; actually, it happened [23:45]
BigBitz a rouge CA is only useful until the associated CRLs are correctly updated. [23:45]
BigBitz I know it happened with the diginotar etc attack. [23:45]
BigBitz but they're not exactly longetivity attacks if you have a proper root CA in use. [23:45]
pankkake sure, but what about government coercion? [23:45]
BigBitz gtfo. [23:45]
pankkake it won't be an attack [23:45]
pankkake it won't be known [23:45]
BigBitz erm... [23:46]
pankkake and diginotar was still a huge failure, albeit temporary; we have the means to make it not happen [23:46]
BigBitz they'd have to coerice [sp?] multiple root servers / root CAs. [23:46]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 28 @ 0.02322 = 0.6502 BTC [-] [23:47]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 2 @ 0.02322 = 0.0464 BTC [-] [23:47]
pankkake why? [23:47]
* rewq has quit (Quit: Mango IRC for iOS and OS X, http://mediaware.sk/mango) [23:47]
BigBitz because root CAs can revoke bad certs. [23:47]
assbot [BTCTC] [BASIC-MINING] 3 @ 0.135 = 0.405 BTC [-] [23:47]
BigBitz Do you understand how PKI/Digital Certificates work or are you just spreading FUD? [23:48]
* jborkl has quit (Quit: jborkl) [23:48]
jurov you can't have distributed DNS/SSL when underlying TCP/IP stack is vulnerable to coercion [23:48]
pankkake if it's public knowledge the certificate is bad [23:48]
Rawted lol coerice! [23:48]
Rawted i love you bitz [23:48]
jurov if they combined namecoin with tor, that makes more sense [23:48]
BigBitz spelling isn't my strongest point :P [23:48]
Rawted ;) [23:48]
Rawted you just added an extra 'i' because you are generous, that's all. [23:49]
BigBitz you know it... :) [23:49]
Rawted making sure there's plenty of vowels to go around. good man. [23:49]

mircea_popescu lol [23:52]
mircea_popescu they'd have to coerice [sp?] multiple root servers / root CAs. << this is irrelevant [23:53]
mircea_popescu they are currently coercing multiple isps to give out information illegally. [23:53]

pankkake what a fool :( [23:55]
pankkake another solution to the issue is http://web.monkeysphere.info/ - as dead as namecoin though [23:57]
