Since you boys are printing tanks now...

I'm totally impressed with this notion of taking special-formula coat hangers and special-design bubble printers and outputting a plastic mess instead of an ink mess. Seriously.i

Other than downlolaiding a tank, there's another thing that would interest me. Specifically : I want a desktop AA battery.

Here's how it would work (I imagine) :

  • A number of small cameras (I guess at least two, to be able to calculate depth ?) mounted on whatever mounts needed spend their time rotating at whatever pace. Once a flying object is identified that fits the criteria (of being larger than a bacterium but smaller than a finch),
  • A number of cool machine guns go into action.

Obviously there'd be need for some sort of central processing unit, which may be included as a Raspberry Pi/whatever or not be included physically but instead have the entire system plug into a desktop (or smartphone, I don't care).

What interests me is the machine guns, really. They should be not longer than six inches, and they should be totally out of this world cool. Six barrel rotating shit like the M134 Mini, tiny miniature hovitzers with full blowback action, nitro cooled lasers if you can get something working that's small enough.

So here's how this thing works : I am sitting at my computer dicking around, in comes a fly. Bzzzzz and dumb shit like that. There's an eerie moment of silence as the cameras stop rotating and switch to tracking it, and then bumbumbumpewpewpewsccccccwwwwp. Net result ? Downed fly.

I haven't done the calculations of exactly what caliber needs to be used so as to deliver enough energy to kill a flyii, but I imagine it'd be really tiny, maybe 1/10 milimeter or something.

Wouldn't this shit be cool ? Forget mosquito repellent, just install your trusty Zone Air Defense Unit nearby.

  1. dub CREATE? Is that you EskimoBob? Sounds retarded enough to be EskimoBob.
pigeons CREATE is matthew from "red star mining", quite an interesting fellow, with some idea to sell 3d printing services of some kind and not really make any money from it.
dub Yes, 'interesting' is one word.
    pigeons Nicer than schizophrenic.
dub Or dumber than a box of hammers.
    mircea_popescu Can i print a tank yet?

dub Would you download a tank?
    pigeons Yes a toy tank.
    mircea_popescu If I could download a tank I wouldn't download boobs...

dub Yeah, take boobs by force with your new tank.
pigeons No you cannot download a nitrous tank mp.
mircea_popescu snorts like an idiot at the badonkadonk reference

  2. But marginally kill a fly - the situation where the result is usually a badly wounded but not dead fly is truly the ideal. []

Prolly harder to miniaturize lasers enough.

And besides, 1/16th of an inch tall machine gun belts ? Suparcute.

  3. I don't know if this is just a thought experiment, but I'm almost sure this stuff will be hot in the near future. Given the rather intense research into military insect-like drones, mosquito detectors/killers would have a much broader set of applications.

I'm pretty sure it will be hot in the future simply because it's lego++ and also because this happens to be pretty much the only type of NGO/NPO I would consider endowing at the present time : get more small children more guns.
