mircea_popescu: so i had a router fail it the most amazing manner overnight. it powercycles - turns on, blinks the downstream connections for a second, then power goes off, then back on again. it doesn't look analog at all, like failing power lines, but very much a time-precise cycle, almost as if it's being flooded (which it isn't) or getting whatever magical packet in a loop. [08:11]
mircea_popescu: anyone seen this before ? [08:11]

mircea_popescu: yeah. pretty colors. dunno where you're headed with log visualisations... [10:06]
phf: :) [10:07]

asciilifeform: 'A malicious interaction with the keyctl usermode interface allows an attacker to crash the kernel. Processing the attached certificate by the kernel leads to a kernel nullpointer dereference. This vulnerably can be triggered by any unprivileged user locally.' [10:30]
asciilifeform: in case anyone ever wondered, while grunting through linux kernel config options, what the nonsensical cryptolade were for [10:31]
asciilifeform: ... it was for this. [10:31]

asciilifeform: ah this , yes [10:33]
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2016-11-25#1573340 << interestingly -- yes. but in that case it was a failing power supply [10:35]

asciilifeform: box switched on, undervoltage detector tripped, reset ad infinitum... [10:35]
mircea_popescu: supply is fine (works on diff identical item). all clues point to "was fed magic packet, patch broken, unit failed to come back" [10:35]
asciilifeform: also happens [10:36]
mircea_popescu: and as it sits on a filtered connection, it'd actually has to have been the tru magic packet, w/e that is. [10:36]
mircea_popescu: ie, in-band [10:36]
asciilifeform: this one would definitely be a 'extract & post the fw for fuxxsake' occasion [10:37]
mircea_popescu: possibly the process was unclean and some portion of payload got clobbered at the gates. [10:37]

pete_dushenski: lamb/lynx gaede << just checked out on yt... simon cowell would have an absolute field day with these twats. they're horrid. [23:24]
mircea_popescu: this entire "children talent" bs is pretty nutty. [23:25]
* mircea_popescu can't recall ever encountering a talented child nor a mother who thought her child's untalented. [23:25]
pete_dushenski: i swear cosby was one of the vanguards of the movement too. "kids say the darndest things" turned into "kids say the only worthwhile thing" [23:25]
pete_dushenski: in other talents, turns out osxen doesn't like multiple version of python in its .bash_profile. so confuzine! (maybe everyone but pete knew this already but it was minor annoyance for ~10 mins while 'ssh could not be found') [23:27]
pete_dushenski: it's what i get for trying to wedge 'pygame' onto osxen box. [23:28]
pete_dushenski: for skool ofc! lab instructor recommended that students not even bother with *nix and just succumb to windows for last two assignments. err no thx. i'd rather just guess what my code is doing and risk failing for lack of test grounds. [23:30]
mircea_popescu: your assignment is to play games ? [23:32]
pete_dushenski: to... 'make' [23:32]
mircea_popescu: ah [23:33]
pete_dushenski: in still other assignments, just picked up a '09 subaru outback today as a company car to replace '02 lexus is300. parties interested in the shortcomings or highlights of either are welcome to inquire within. if there's sufficient interest, a blog post is also on the table. [23:40]
BingoBoingo: Anyways there is a solution to the child talent problem which meshes with the honor society. If you allege your child is talented you put their life on the line should they fail to demonstrate talent. If you allege another person's child is talented you put your own life on the line. [23:41]
mircea_popescu: how about you know, just have another cup of tea instead. [23:43]
BingoBoingo: Too many children and people who care about them. [23:44]
BingoBoingo: Gotta maximize problems solved. [23:45]
