mircea_popescu asciilifeform you know it's a bad habit to state the problem thus. [02:16]
jurov they aren't using whole cells [02:16]
mircea_popescu it's a subset of the "first, one nail" approach [02:16]
mircea_popescu suppose i don't multiply 5 x 7, but i do a fft over a large domain. [02:17]
asciilifeform kakobrekla: http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTM4MTAyNTk1OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwOTA4Njc3._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg << these ? [02:17]
mircea_popescu "close enough" [02:17]
kakobrekla asciilifeform correct. only the bubblers are missing. [02:17]
asciilifeform mircea_popescu: good example. but, not only must accept 'close enough', but go and try to get the answer out with reasonable speed. [02:17]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform do you readily know the volume of "silicone" computation that goes by in the average cell ? [02:18]
kakobrekla reasonable speed for '100000point travelling salesman' problem ? [02:18]
mircea_popescu it's immense. [02:18]
mircea_popescu just folding proteins is a massive task. [02:18]
asciilifeform you'd probably want to make use of, e.g, luciferase [02:18]
asciilifeform and camera. [02:18]
mircea_popescu you're just an opticomputer fanboy arentcha :D [02:18]
asciilifeform so, for those who don't know, there are two basic ways of 'folding' a protein (that is, in physical reality it folds, but you want to know its structure) [02:19]
asciilifeform one - approximate solution of shrodinger's equation for the system of protein-cum-solution [02:20]
mircea_popescu ^ [02:20]
* xe4l (~unknown@162.243.112.233) has joined #bitcoin-assets [02:20]
asciilifeform two - xray crystallography [02:20]
asciilifeform to every n00b's surprise - the cost is roughly similar. [02:20]
asciilifeform (2) gives a result more in line with reality, and so tends to be favoured unless there is something exotic about the system (weird ligand, perverse conditions otherwise, whatever) [02:21]
asciilifeform now, think about why (2) costs roughly same as (1). [02:21]
* mircea_popescu listens [02:21]
asciilifeform why even bring this up: the 'answer' - physical structure of properly folded protein - is 'computed' instantly. [02:22]
asciilifeform now, getting the answer out in a usable form... [02:22]
asciilifeform takes about a year of skilled labour. [02:22]
mircea_popescu "instantly". not quite [02:22]
mircea_popescu but yes. [02:22]
asciilifeform http://www.loper-os.org/?p=25 << me derping about roughly this, in '08. [02:23]
assbot Loper OS » How Much Computation Does the Universe Perform? [02:23]
mircea_popescu the question is more like, suppose i give you piles of C N H O etc molar equivalent to the contents of a live creature, [02:23]

mircea_popescu allow me to dump some nonsense for ready future reference. [17:58]
mircea_popescu Enslaved by male-identification and years of practice within the system as we all still are to one degree or another, the assumption must be that the present system of monopoly capitalism and patriarchy must be replaced and that non-male-identified women must be the responsible ones. . . . [17:58]
mircea_popescu At least three further requirements supplement the strategies of environmentalists if we are to create and preserve a less violent world. I) Every culture must begin to affirm a female future. II) Species responsibility must be returned to women in every culture. III) The proportion of men must be reduced to and maintained at approximately 10% of the human race. . . . [17:58]
mircea_popescu To return species responsibility to women means in very practical terms that erotic and reproductive initiative must be restored to women all over the globe. . . . [17:58]
mircea_popescu Make the decision entirely that of the woman as to how she will be impregnated and how often, if indeed she chooses to be so at all, and whether by heterosexual intercourse, artificial insemination or a form of ovular merging. Restore to each woman the inalienable right to say what shall become of any fertilized egg and to control absolutely the number of children she wishes to emerge from her body. . . . Make nonexist [17:58]
mircea_popescu ent any male’s say-so in the process of reproduction. Create and protect alternative structures of economic and psychological support for independent women — women not attached to men — who are child-bearers and child-raisers. . . . [17:58]
mircea_popescu Women will bear the number of children they know can be sustained not just by their own social group but by the wide ecological system. They will not bear the children that some man wants only to perpetuate his name or the family possession of his property; they will not bear the children they presently convince themselves they must have because their only role is obedient wife and mother; women will not have the child [17:59]
mircea_popescu ren men think are necessary to perpetuate the tribe or the religion or the specific culture. Instead they will bear the children that they want, that they can care for, and that they assess are needed by the specific group and the entire species. . . . [17:59]
mircea_popescu In every culture it must be women in charge of the changes: women-identified women, no women who are pawns of men, not women who out of their fear of losing their lives or those of their children, still hold to the securities of that dangerous patriarchal culture, but women utterly free of coercion, free of male influence and committed to the principle that the right of species regulation is their own, and not the prer [17:59]
mircea_popescu ogative of any man. I suggest that lesbians and other independent women are already moving in this direction. . . . [17:59]
mircea_popescu To secure a world of female values and female freedom we must, I believe, add one more element to the structure of the future: the ratio of men to women must be radically reduced so that men approximate only ten percent of the total population. . . . [17:59]
mircea_popescu We now come to a critical point: how is such a reduction in the male population to take place? One option is of course male infanticide. It differs very little from the female infanticide that has apparently been carried out even into the twentieth century by some cultures. Such an alternative is clearly distasteful and would not constitute creative social change. . . . [17:59]
mircea_popescu [I]f women are given the freedom of their bodies then they may well choose [experimental "ovular merging" technology that produces only female embryos] in great enough numbers to make a significant difference in the sex ratio of women to men. A 75% female to 25% male ratio could be achieved in one generation if one-half of a population reproduced heterosexually and one-half by ovular merging. [17:59]
mircea_popescu Such a prospect is attractive to women who feel that if they bear sons no amount of love and care and nonsexist training will save those sons from a culture where male violence is institutionalized and revered. These are women saying, “No more sons. We will not spend twenty years of our lives raising a potential rapist, a potential batterer, a potential Big Man.” [17:59]

mircea_popescu so there you have it, perfectly good reason to oppose libertard environmentalism, along with the rest of women-studies driven libertardism. [18:00]
jurov ha, chetty knows you [18:00]
mircea_popescu the future, if there is one, is happy identification as slaves for the people who are, for very good reason, exactly that. [18:00]

chetty Let me point out that as woman I think the author of that piece is totally insane. [18:05]
mircea_popescu this derpage is so delicious lol. olg hags clinging to a social relevancy and political influence they never had and never will have. derp on, sisters! [18:05]
mircea_popescu chetty just a little misguided, imo. she perceives the problem correctly, there's too many idiots. [18:06]
mircea_popescu the solutions she comes up with all stem from her unwarranted premise that she's a whole and complete being. [18:06]
chetty the current habit in some cultures of aborting the majority of female children is equally insane [18:07]
mircea_popescu anyway, i for one am muchly in favour of california and perhaps the entire us applying this novel thinking. for one thing, it's too expensive to find out what exactly the drawbacks of this ovular merging thing are other than by using voluntary subjects. [18:07]
mircea_popescu chetty simple way to beg for war is all. [18:08]

mircea_popescu ain't nobody got time for that. not no more. [18:11]
mircea_popescu course they'll live to regret it, but on the plus side, not so very many of them. [18:11]
chetty hmm humans live longer, we have all these modern things to reduce work and yet we dont have time. I admit that one confounds me. [18:12]
mircea_popescu time is a psychological phenomenon. [18:13]
mircea_popescu roughly speaking, the time the subject perceives he has is a scalar computed as a function of the interruptions count in their brain. [18:13]
mircea_popescu the more often conscience flows get interrupted, the less subjective time is had. [18:13]
mircea_popescu simple musical verification of this : all military marches are short musical phrases with a lot of percution and a lot of short measures. all dirges are the opposite. [18:14]
chetty haha first really good reason I have heard for population reduction, more funerals [18:17]
mircea_popescu lol yup [18:18]
mircea_popescu anyway, i don't believe population reduction is currently a controversial topic, or ever was during the past century or two. clearly there are much to many people around, and the marginal advantage of exploring the space of possibilities slightly better isn't worth the hassle. [18:19]
mircea_popescu i don't care that having a billion instead of a million people alive means the prettiest girl is 0.675% prettier. [18:19]
mircea_popescu the only bitch with all of this is nimby, but otherwise it's quite well established a point of theory as well as practice, that the people herd needs to be thinned out. [18:20]
chetty that depends a lot on the basis of the thinning [18:22]
penguirker New blog post: http://contravex.com/2014/09/14/peter-diamandis-is-a-lab-modified-organism/ [18:22]
mircea_popescu well sure, tis where the controversy starts [18:23]
mircea_popescu so far the solution seems to be a fertility drop [18:23]
mircea_popescu which you know, will do it. if the average woman has 0.005 children in her lifetime for a generation, the population will go from 10bn to 10mn in that timeframe. [18:23]
