he1kki SEPA-transfers should go thru in 1-2 days, at least when originating from Finland. [13:24]
miernik MtGox they might not have all the customers money, so they have to wait till some flows in to make withdrawals [13:24]
mircea_popescu what ?! [13:25]
miernik SEPA transfers really go max next business day (if ordered by cut-off hour), some same day [13:25]
mircea_popescu what do you mean they don't have customer's money miernik ? [13:26]
miernik well, if MtGox doesn't have all the cash in their accounts, they have to wait till someone deposits to fulfill the withdrawal, simple [13:26]
mircea_popescu that's an illegal way to run a business. [13:26]
miernik they will not admit it of course, but why else they'd delay transfers so much [13:26]
mircea_popescu this is pretty serious an alegation [13:27]
mircea_popescu do you have some proof ? other than delays i mean ? [13:27]
miernik I have an account at the same bank as MtGox, made a test SEPA at 20:17 and it was in another bank next day at 15:00 [13:27]
he1kki Fixing liquidity problems with customer payment delays is the worst business practise ever. [13:27]
miernik no other proof then delay, but I have proof that transfers from that bank really reach other banks in EU the next day [13:27]
miernik when I order them [13:28]
miernik so its MtGox delaying them, not their bank [13:28]
miernik they might have balance in Japan and have to slush funds from there, but their Japanese bank is a direct corespondent of their polish one so transfers will come max D+2 (2 business days after ordering) [13:30]
miernik but with so much fees they should have anough cash to keep enough for a few days worth of withdrawals on both accounts [13:31]
miernik they only have Japan + UK + Poland, so its not so many accounts to balance [13:32]
* jk9357 (~textual@de.gigabit.perfect-privacy.com) has joined #bitcoin-otc-eu [13:32]
phedny so maybe funds are locked away in interest-bearing savings accounts... ;) [13:32]
Mqrius This idea is indeed the what many people are thinking. US transfers are also very slow, Supposedly someone withdrawing 50k took 20 days or so. [13:32]
Mqrius (The fractional reserve idea, I mean) [13:32]
miernik if you charge 0.6% fees on trades, you can afford an express D+0 transfer once a day... [13:33]
miernik just for the imbalance between PL and Japan [13:33]
he1kki I would not go that far with blaming MtGox, with their volumes it can be sepa-area financial authorities who are creating delays with their money laundering investigations. Bitcoin exchanges should adopt business model of bitcoin.de, where transfers are made customer to customer, and exchange handle only bitcoins. [13:33]
Mqrius he1kki: I'm not saying that's what they're doing, I'm just saying that they might be doing that, it is seen by a lot of people as the most likely explanation, and they're losing customers fast to this [13:34]
miernik the better for Bitcoin in general [13:35]
Mqrius the bitcoin.de option sucks. You have to deal with individuals, with no real guarantee you're getting your money. You can't buy 10k at the same time. [13:35]
miernik the more decentralized exchanges are the better [13:35]
Mqrius bitcoin.de works for bitcoin.de, but not for a main bitcoin exchange. [13:35]
miernik http://bitcoinmagazine.net/growing-decentralization-in-the-bitcoin-economy/ [13:35]
vodka [ Growing Decentralization in the Bitcoin Economy | Bitcoin Magazine ] - http://bitcoinmagazine.net [13:35]
miernik Mqrius: there should be no "main" bitcoin exchange [13:36]
Mqrius Okay, not for any large bitcoin exchange then [13:36]
miernik Mqrius: ideally no bitcoin exchange should have more then 5% total BTC trade worldwide [13:36]
miernik I will celebrate the day when MtGox drops below 50% total volume of all exchanges [13:37]
rg so im setting up a new bitvps linux image [13:37]
rg that's 'secure' [13:37]
rg how do you guys feel about a box crashing to avoid getting owned [13:37]
rg if a process succeeds in elevating its privs, the box will panic [13:37]
rg (elevating through the kernel) [13:37]
rg it will attempt to do all the normal stuff to prvent it [13:38]
rg but if it succeeds [13:38]
rg the system will panic [13:38]
rg to prevent giving out access [13:38]
mircea_popescu miernik yes but i think what happens with mtgox is that they have a manual check for sepa/wires [13:39]
mircea_popescu and that gets clogged and so delays. [13:39]
mircea_popescu Mqrius wow can you document the 20 days ? that would be really fucken serious. [13:40]
mircea_popescu if delays are proportional to the sum like that then mtgox is going under in a matter of months [13:40]
Mqrius mircea_popescu: No I heard it from people, and the thing is, people withdrawing such large amount generally don't want to publicize it [13:40]
mircea_popescu seeing how they have been declaring to be operationally in the red for a year + [13:40]
Mqrius so mtgox could get away with it. [13:40]
mircea_popescu humph. [13:40]
mircea_popescu see, i can't discern now if this is insane internet rumour or actual fact. [13:41]
sturles Banks can be real slow as well. The larger the amount the more they earn by delaying it. [13:41]
Mqrius mircea_popescu: I know, sorry about that :/ [13:42]
miernik anyway, don't use MtGox - even if MtGox is not fractional, you help Bitcoin decentralization by using other exchanges [13:42]
mircea_popescu miernik except other exchanges don't work. [13:42]
miernik mircea_popescu: how don't work if they work? [13:42]
miernik its MtGox that doesn't work [13:42]
mircea_popescu sturles this is a valid point, but they never dared do more than a few hours/max a day here. [13:42]
mircea_popescu miernik give me an example of an exchange with spread < 1% [13:42]
miernik spread doesn't matter [13:43]
miernik its the price you want that matters [13:43]
miernik if you want to buy, choose one which has lower prices [13:43]
miernik if you want to sell choose an exchange which has higher prices [13:43]
miernik you easily get negative spread this way :) [13:43]
miernik a -3% spread is less then 1% :) [13:44]
mircea_popescu spread doesn't matter ? are you from, the future ? [13:44]
miernik why would spread matter to you? [13:44]
mircea_popescu because spread is the indication of the thing working man. [13:45]
miernik do you want to buy coins? price (fee adjusted) matters for you [13:45]
mircea_popescu just like on a girl tits and ass matter, on an exchange spread matters. [13:45]
mircea_popescu i'm not a sucker aaahh i mean customer. i am a trader. [13:45]
mircea_popescu we play a different game. [13:45]
miernik pff, I am a trader too, and I get negative spread without using MtGox [13:46]
miernik if you don't want to believe, your problem [13:46]
mircea_popescu its not a matter of belief. [13:46]
mircea_popescu i think it's a matter of size, but anyway. [13:46]
miernik whats your problem with Intersango's volume for example? [13:47]
miernik 10% of MtGox volume [13:48]
miernik on all their markets combined [13:48]
miernik MtGox about 1500000 BTC / 30 days combined [13:48]
miernik Intersango about 150000 BTC / 30 days combined [13:48]
miernik 10 times less, but still enough [13:49]
