Ubuntu is a worse piece of shit than MS-DOS ever was.

Monday, 19 May, Year 6 d.Tr. | Author: Mircea Popescu

If this is not directly obvious to you, let's consider two pretty decent benchmarks.

First proof that Ubuntu is a worse piece of shit than MS-DOS ever was :

  1. Acquire a generic system with a > 1 TB HDD.
  2. Install Ubuntu. Any version you feel like.
  3. $ for ( ( c=1; c<=1000; c++ )) do dd if=/dev/urandom of=./file/$i bs=1M count=500 done
  4. $ tar cvf file.tar ./file
  5. Take a piss then come back.
  6. Proceed to try and use that system. Like for instance to browse the interwebs. For that matter, see if the task can even be completed before the piece of shit crashes and burns through blocking itself out of blocking itself.
  7. For bonus points, renice tar and see what that does.
  8. For even more bonus points, try "compress" in gui mode first, then imagine it's probably the "file-roller" piece of shit whatever it is that causes the problem, then drop to cli. Then be afraid. Very, very afraid.

MS-DOS was perfectly capable of taking 1k megabyte archives, crumpling them together into one gigabyte file and while you couldn't be using the system for anything else in the interim, this was how the damned thing worked anyway. But at least it'd actually complete the task, at least you know, half the time.

Try your fucking Ubuntu, seriously. Just try it.

Second proof that Ubuntu is a worse piece of shit than MS-DOS ever was :

  1. Acquire a generic system with a > 1 TB HDD.
  2. Install Ubuntu. Any version you feel like.
  3. Uninstall the Internet. Because you feel like it, that's why!
  4. Try and boot.

There is no motherfucking reason conceivable or inconceivable that x.org should depend on netbase. There's no reason compiz should depend on netbase. There's no reason gdm should depend on netbase. There's no motherfucking Joseph on a stick reason gnome-disk-utility should depend on netbase. EVER!

Gnome-sudoku needs netbase, seriously ? What the Thomas Hinkle's whore of a mother for! What does gvfs need netbase for ? KBD! KBD fucking depends on netbase. Why ? Can nautilus not work without internet ? Then why does it depend on netbase! What's ntfs-3g need webs for ?

I used to be perfectly able to uninstall any fucking anything I wanted in MS-DOS, and the system chugged along. Without the uninstalled bit, whatever it was. But the system chugged along.

But no, Ubuntu needs everything for everything else, because it's packaged by a bunch of intellectually lazy apes. The net result being a more pretentious, slower, buggier re-implementation of half of common Windows.

A fie upon you, fuckwits. With friends like you, we really don't need any enemies.

  1. Ubuntu dependency hell is the worst. Then there's the "community" forum where god forbid someone offers a detailed question and hopes for an informed response or at least a well intentioned STFU, read X in the fucking ,manual. No, you get worse than nothing. You get Herp, Derp, and non-solutions that distract you from the original problem if you take time to consider them.

Whence does all this braindamage stem!

  3. Probably defective steam cells.

  4. Oh, but this is one tricky problem, and the culprit is more than just the package management or whatever. Problem is, library dependencies are hard-coded at compile-time (even though they're *dynamic* libraries). That is, if you compile against a library, you can't then later decide to ditch it without recompiling the whole thing.

I hate saying this, but if you really want that level of customization, try Gentoo. You're gonna grow old until it finishes installing, there are a millions of ways in which you can easily break it, but you'll get it right if you know what you're doing. That's quite the opposite of Linux for retarded, or whatever Ubuntu's slogan is nowadays.

For the record, I'm using a stripped Debian install (no packages except the core, not even sudo) over which I've added whatever I need. It doesn't get rid of this particular problem, but at least it gives me enough control over what I can do with my system (and yes, I am running X11 and a window manager).

I'm mostly back to Sarge myself. Such is life among the retarded children of lazy parents.

But as to the topic : someone gotta invent modules I guess.

  6. Ubuntu was turned into Windows, i.e. an huge monolithic PoS impossible to understand or deviate from.
And they also turned the interface into Mac OS.

PPAs and better release schedules (compared to Debian) are probably the only good thing left about Ubuntu.

I'm not sure which Linux distribution to recommend, nowadays.

spyked, I use Gentoo for that reason: I can customize it and fuck it up, but I can also fix it. I almost never feel constrained. Of course that's not for everyone, as you clearly need to be a technical person and organized enough especially if you manage multiple machines.
A modern machine is installed in a day, if your configuration is done already.

  7. "...it’s packaged by a bunch of intellectually lazy apes."

    That was funny! :))

    @pankkake Amen.

  9. I think that choice and flexibility in Linux are actually a problem. In windows, if something is not working, you curse you faith, maybe spend more money but eventually you move on.

In Linux you keep trying distributions, fixes, window managers, etc. to get it to be perfect, until you give up in frustration. I would love to run debian stable but it just does not recognize my hardware, and I have kids now so no time to tinker, so I use Lubuntu.

This is definitely a major problem. "People have alternatives so no reason to try and do anything right" sort of poisonous postconsumerism outlook.

  11. Ubuntu just needs [A]bort,[R]etry,[I]gnore,[F]ail? kernel patch. And all will be well.

Or at least a "Press Ok to Cancel" thing.

  13. Two years have passed since this post of yours and guess what:
    ...
Ubuntu is still the worse piece of shit. When this crap freezes, hell is unleashed

    *Thumbsup*

At least you got native systemderp nao, bro!

  15. I agree.

I purchased a new system last January 2019. 9700K processor 64G of SOA ram, 500G SD (also an SOA part) with Windows 10 Pro installed

Boot time on first boot of the new system: ~10 seconds. Just what one would expect.

Installed Ubuntu 18.04 (a real pain in the ass installation process btw), as a dual boot (I need windows 10 for most of my work and my non work), I need Ubuntu solely because the assholes at Rubygems decided not to support mingW Ruby

So now my boot times from startup are measured in minutes, as in 5-6 minutes from start, just to get to grub, and if I accidentally choose to perform a restart...well...that's simply a no go. Eventually I just have to shut it down, (I've waited as long as 15 minutes before I finally panic, give up and do a hard shutdown, then restart, system flags the hard stop and I have to wait to go to bios, save nothing restart, wait another 5-6 minutes for grub, then finally get to Ubuntu 2-3 minutes later.

The whole while I'm not even sure if it'll actually complete the boot.

What an utter piece of second-rate garbage. Nearly $2800 invested in this system and Windows 95 was a better interface.

I've heard for years from Linux snob how superior it is. I have to laugh.

And yes, I'm furious. this is a major time waster.

    rant off.

Amusingly, this'd be my experience exactly!

  17. For some odd reason, Ubuntu kept insisting with the pile-o'-crap DE called Unity. I suspect that piece of junk is the reason for a good chunk of the bottlenecks in the system - at least that was my experience. But hey, Unity got dropped starting with Ubuntu 19.04, so there's hope.

On my machine I tried xUbuntu instead, which means Ubuntu with LXDE instead of Unity. Much smoother and saner.

not just ubuntu Linux in general is a complete mess . I keep trying it and it always causes problems, incompaitbility or just unreliable, most common problem is completely failing to boot for no reason and being unrepairable when it fails. Its a joke. Any OS or application written by committee will always be useless. IN the OS world closed is good. the best Os ever was VMS by Dec, unfortunately they missed their chance and los out to Unix, which is also a sack of S**t, I worked at SCO for a while and was unimpressed. try this , in your root dir . cat > * then enter, then ctrl-D (why D god knows!!!). it will createa file * in your root. ok now try and delete the damm thing!!!!! rm * ho ho ho. what idiot allowed the creation of a file with the name of a wildcard!!
one SCO high up told me "only two things came out of berkely in the 60's, Unix and LSD, thats not a coincidence"

    Lol.

We broadly agree, how fucking unthinkable this'd have been back in the 90s...

  20. no sound on dell completely new laptop with ubuntu 18.04...It worked for a while..and then problem. NO solution on the net, no support from smart users of such a crap. I was enthusiastic for a while, but when you see all this shit you give up.

There's loads and loads of this type of problem, coming from the very nature of "open source" bullshit, as it's extremely friable and structurally incapable of dealing with complexity. Lulz like "the built-in net card that can't be used because the OS doesn't know how to get it out of power-saving mode" (which sounds a lot like what may be the problem with your card, at that) etcetera etcetera. They "fixed" something somewhere breaking something else somewhere else in the process, because nobody tests anything nor would they know what (or how) if they somehow wanted to, and so on.
