REF: STATE 35769

1. Poloff discussed USG position March 2 regarding the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) 2005 with MFA OSCE and Human Rights Directorate Officer Nicoleta Birladianu March 2.

2. Romania does not have an official opinion on the CSW 2005 Declaration at this time and does not plan to speak during the plenary session. Birladianu noted that abortion is legal in Romania, and the lower house of the Romanian parliament recently approved a draft law on reproductive health which upholds the legality of abortion in Romania. Romania's view on abortion will most likely be reflected in Romania's position with respect to the declaration.
