mircea_popescu: https://news.netcraft.com/archives/2018/08/24/august-2018-web-server-survey.html#more-26685 << in other lulz, netcraft estimation of active websites, flat for EIGHT YEARS RUNNING. [01:03]
mircea_popescu: (their method of evaluating "activeness" is to remove content, keep html tag structure, and only count each structure once. supposedly it gets rid of autogenerated crapola.) [01:04]
diana_coman: wow, congrats asciilifeform on c101pa! [05:24]
asciilifeform: diana_coman: to be very specific, i did not properly break cr50. what i found instead was an apparently-Official (albeit undocumented) knob in the most recent fw release, which does equiv of rma unlock ( sets all of the permission bits for console ) and enables spi bus access, through which can r/w the main and ec fw turds. [10:37]
asciilifeform: what this does, is remove the 'nobus' aspect of the thing, nao anybody can r/w the fw via the snake. [10:38]
asciilifeform: what i have not found a way to do, is to neuter cr50 in the sense originally wanted , where it turns into simply battery controller and nobody can rewrite from snake. [10:38]
asciilifeform: fwiw i can also nao control 'pinmux' ( the built-in gadget that connects arbitrary lines on the pcb to arbitrary others ) and various other vendor knobs [10:40]
asciilifeform: there also appears to be a knob that switches off the usb console entirely, but i have not tried it yet, will test when i'm about to throw out the current mobo i have in there (with the damaged mouse connector) and put in new one (i have replacements) [10:43]
asciilifeform: ( for those who did not follow the orig c101pa threads : the box has ~three~ firmware turds: 1) main (8MB) bootloader 2) EC (little arm thingie, has own console , controls all of kbd but the power and reset lines, as well as various voltages, and battery charger) 3) cr50 -- controls power/reset lines, inits the charging brick, and 'god mode' debug over the other 2 chips, i.e. cpu and EC ) [10:47]
asciilifeform: i did get the unlock to persist across reboots, last night. [10:51]
asciilifeform: ( if main fw is allowed to boot into 'non-dev' mode, it clears it, but once we wipe it and replace with cuntoo fw, this will not happen ) [10:51]
asciilifeform: imho the ideal setup for this box (which has ~4~ nonvolatile roms -- the 3 above, and the 16GB ssd soldered onto mobo) is to put uboot in the main fw, and cuntoo ~installer~ on the 16GB ssd, which will boot if blank sd card is inserted, and install cuntoo on the latter and subsequently boot off sd. this way the box will not slowly wear out the nonreplaceable internal ssd. [10:53]
asciilifeform: this will give a setup where a box separated from its sd, is 'unsecret', and can be expected to be identical to other cured units. [10:56]
asciilifeform: other item, is that a main bootloader built for this thing, theoretically will also work on the c100pa, which has no cr50. [10:58]
asciilifeform: ( in so far as i can tell, those boxes are identical, aside from older rockchip (4 core, vs 6) , smaller ram, and cylindrical dc power supply connector instead of usb-c ) [11:00]
asciilifeform: i'ma let mircea_popescu make the call re whether these finds add up to a 'let's make lappys' or not yet. [11:02]
* asciilifeform bbl,teatime [11:03]
diana_coman: asciilifeform, to me that still sounds like quite a big step ahead [11:20]
asciilifeform: diana_coman: on one hand, it makes for straight recipe for cuntoo lappy but on other, it would still be slightly syphilitic , i.e. not wholly scrubbed of googlism [11:50]
asciilifeform: in (mostly) unrelated lulz, recently asciilifeform found himself visiting several different crapple shops, and standing in a queue for hours, sov-style, simply to submit for repair a crapple lappy (2 yr old !) with swollen battery, whole thing looked like spoiled food tin [12:21]
diana_coman: the unique apple experience! [12:22]
asciilifeform: and, lulzily, not only do they charge coupla hundy for this, but they ~glue it in~ to make harder to replace ( chinese of course sell replacement, with bottle of acid to dissolve the glue, takes whole day, but this does not unbend the keyboard, mousepad, chassis, that bend from the swell ) [12:23]
diana_coman: asciilifeform, re "not wholly scrubbed" - I've been cleaning eulora code for years and it's still not fully scrubbed of ps shit, so.. [12:23]
asciilifeform: diana_coman: at least that one's scrubbable, rather than in drm rom [12:23]
diana_coman: to me apple stuff is still essentially a fashion item and yes, usually that comes with insanity as far as I can tell [12:24]
diana_coman: in principle yes in practice, I'm not sure anymore where does scrubbing end essentially [12:25]
asciilifeform: diana_coman: fashions aside, if you're misfortunate enuff to need a recent x86-64 lappy where can attach large external displays, wifi, etc without aeons of config tweaking and flaky, yer stuck with crapple [12:26]
diana_coman: aeons of config tweaking or aeons in queue apparently? [12:27]
diana_coman: at any rate: sucks [12:27]
asciilifeform: it's for heathen work, for moneys. [12:28]
asciilifeform: ftr this was their last even half-usable box, right before they took away the f-keys. [12:29]
diana_coman: well, at least if they pay you for staying in the queue... [12:29]
diana_coman: I suppose that's also not that uncommon "productivity improvement" via "latest tech" [12:31]
asciilifeform: crapple has never not sucked, but the battery glue is imho a new low. gotta wonder what's next, maybe spikes will randomly emerge from the kbd [12:35]
asciilifeform: ( i would say 'catches fire' is next, but then recalled that this is already not uncommon, and not merely in crapple machines ) [12:36]
diana_coman: well, it looks pretty :D [12:39]
diana_coman: the spikes idea sounds cool too, maybe suggest it [12:39]
asciilifeform: i can already picture it : 2y from nao, asciilifeform will be posting re crapple box where there's tank of poisonous brazilian caterpillars in place of battery, and they broke loose, and gotta stand in queue to have'em replaced, and meanwhile crawling up sleeves [12:41]
asciilifeform: and it'll still be preferable to microshit. [12:44]
asciilifeform: ( since mircea_popescu is asleep, i'ma have to put in placeholder for the oblig thread, [ m: 'you deserve this for working for a living, idjit' a: '...' ] ) [12:46]
diana_coman: lol! [12:50]
asciilifeform: hey, i suspect the caterpillar battery is inevitable : 'ecological!111' [12:50]
asciilifeform: it isn't any moar outrageous than the butane-filled refrigerator BingoBoingo found himself with [12:51]
asciilifeform: and , fwiw, asciilifeform would rather live in su circa 1982 and design little calculators for 'elektronika'. but nobody asked him. [12:57]
asciilifeform: upstack -- folx who aint condemned to work with crapple artifacts, can laugh off the idiocies, but they spread like pestilence to other vendors, e.g. glossy lcd, glued-in battery, gpu soldered with balls that thermally cycle and guaranteed to come loose in 3-4 yrs, have already become ~ubiquitous in other portable boxen [13:00]
asciilifeform: or take the 'dollar store' quality kbd. already sop in all lappy. [13:01]
asciilifeform: ( oblig. emulated-mircea_popescu answers, 'why do you need to take a comp on airplanes! sit on throne, in beach, drink rum, instead' ) [13:03]
asciilifeform: aanyway i'm off to unwind for a spell in the room where it's 1982 , bbl. [13:08]

mircea_popescu: lmao [13:22]
mircea_popescu: and cuntoo ~installer~ on the 16GB ssd << yes. [13:27]
mircea_popescu: and yes, i find it adds to lets make lappy. [13:28]

mircea_popescu: girl was then sent on the premises, to explain that because they failed to have an online presence, either they let her photograph select items for her master or else they lose the sale. [13:31]
mircea_popescu: they didn't merely lose the sale but specifically sov-style she was "asked to leave". [13:31]
mircea_popescu: because average ustard actually perceives that a) limiting himself to his broke-ass, never-seen-money-in-life compatriots is not merely an acceptable business strategy, but legally mandatory and b) the correct response to "unexpected situation" is "nopenopenopenopenope". [13:32]
mircea_popescu: notwithstanding that universally "unexpected situation" is the subjective perception of "we utterly fucked up". [13:32]
mircea_popescu: the argentinization of the united states is so far progressed, i literally can not distinguish between the two by now. they make the same 0 sales. [13:33]

asciilifeform: 160 metre barrel. [15:03]
mircea_popescu: incidentally, ~that~ may be a good use of ye olde pellet gun. [15:04]
mircea_popescu: make a lengthy light barrel, do most of the acceleration towards the end, loose less energy to ^5 rule. [15:04]
Mocky: I'm getting "#pizarro :Cannot send to nick/channel" so will just drop this here: I created a dir named 'wwwhabeeb' in my shared hosting account. can you set me up to have domain mockyhabeeb.com be fed from that? [15:07]
asciilifeform: mod6: plz add Mocky to #p voice [15:07]
mircea_popescu: Mocky need to identify with nickserv, they prolly put +r on why new domain i don't get it ?! [15:08]
mircea_popescu: use your blog, that's what you have it for. [15:08]
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: giant artillery is a fertile field , imho ( take for instance the concept of evacuated barrel. impressive results even among basement aficionados with air rifles, in these ) [15:09]
asciilifeform: expensive, but for same dough as the usg gigantic laser nonsense can get much bigger bang. [15:11]
mircea_popescu: i even saw ancient "invention", was pretty entertaining : barrel has holes cut, through which walls can fall in. as the projectile moves through barrel it clicks the supports walls fall behind it, leaving a chamber. low pressure (ordinary 50kg air compressor) resulting in common bullet shooting at supersonic speeds. [15:11]
asciilifeform: supersonic per se is not so difficult to achieve, ordinary air rifle gives routinely [15:12]
mircea_popescu: right. [15:12]
mircea_popescu: but usually with tiny pellets. this fired 50-100g sorta things. [15:12]
Mocky: mircea_popescu, it's not new just sitting unused. I'll use blog, yes. If I find a use for the alternate, will be ready to go [15:13]
mircea_popescu: a ok. [15:13]
mircea_popescu: but do not fall into the trap of "this is for engineering and this is for fucking and this is for..." [15:13]
asciilifeform: ( btw modern air rifle, not the break-open type but the refinement of the austrian 1700s concept, where you pump for hour to fill the bottle, is mighty impressive item, i have one here for pest control, readily punches hole in several wooden planks laid together ) [15:13]
mircea_popescu: a man divided upon himself can not stand. let people looking for mockybot gaze upon mockycock, it's good for them. [15:13]
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform truth be told ordinary air can get packed pretty tight before it becomes degenerate matter. [15:14]

mircea_popescu: http://www.northshorecompressor.com/ << dealers wanted! [15:15]
asciilifeform: the interesting bit is that you can get the 300 atm by ~hand~ [15:15]

mircea_popescu: anyway, https://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server2200/84dac/product_images/uploaded_images/nc-20-industrial-web.jpg << 6k psi item not so big deal [15:16]
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform takes a while and very good quality mechanicals. [15:16]
asciilifeform: takes about 40min, if you're in shape [15:16]
asciilifeform: can use electric compressor, as mircea_popescu's photo, but these are finnicky & expensive, need regular oiling [15:16]
asciilifeform: folx who fill diving tanks, use these. [15:17]
mircea_popescu: for humans, 6k psi ~= 40 kn/mm^2 [15:17]
asciilifeform: it is interesting to consider the austrian rifle -- was 'wunderwaffe' of its time, picture, <1s/shot , and iirc 50+ shots on one bottle, with ~= energy to musket of the time [15:18]
asciilifeform: was finnicky/expensive tech tho, and did not catch on [15:19]
asciilifeform: their compressor was a thing resembling old school fire brigade pump, the kind with seesaw handle [15:19]
mircea_popescu: still, you have to have finely machined fine alloys. [15:21]
asciilifeform: interestingly the weak point was not the metals, then, but the pressure gasket. they had to use leather. [15:22]
asciilifeform: which had to be wet. [15:22]
asciilifeform: dry air -- leaks. [15:22]
mircea_popescu: as anyone who's ever had surpise sex knows. [15:23]
asciilifeform: erry time i read about 'faberge' era tech, astonished re what was possible [15:23]
asciilifeform: consider von kempelen's creations, say. [15:23]
mircea_popescu: quite. [15:23]
