kingofsports hey guys question regarding futures - why do people that are not hedging a postion they have buy futures? Generally future prices are below the today price of a stock or commodity. Why not just sell at todays price instead of 30 days from now if you arent trying to hedge something? [01:23]
benkay leverage [01:23]
* Ogedei (~Ogedei@unaffiliated/ogedei) has joined #bitcoin-assets [01:23]
kingofsports is there any way of profiting from buying a futures contract if i dont have a position in that stock? [01:23]
benkay yes, by selling the contract. [01:23]
* Rulother-pc (~Rulother_@c-71-59-16-33.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) has joined #bitcoin-assets [01:24]
kingofsports such as options, where in many cases u never hold the stock u just lose or instantly profit if u buy at a strike price [01:24]
kingofsports okay so offering a contract is always +EV i assume well in most cases. [01:24]
mircea_popescu kingofsports if the price in the future is below the spot and you don't need the item until the future then of course you buy the future [01:24]
kingofsports since u offer a lower price paid in 30 days [01:24]
mircea_popescu it's cheaper. [01:24]
kingofsports ah i just dont understand how futures is similar to options, someone told me that. [01:25]
* Ogedei_ has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds) [01:25]
mircea_popescu well i guess you got some reading to do. [01:25]
kingofsports i just dont see why it would be beneficial to BUY an offered future, if u could sell for more at todays price. [01:26]
kingofsports i cant see how THAT MANY people would buy futures cause they are in a stuck postion til that length of time goes by, but futures are huge. [01:26]
mircea_popescu hence the reading. [01:26]
kingofsports i could def see how offering a future price could be profitablre. [01:26]
mircea_popescu look. are you married ? [01:27]
assbot [BTCTC] [DMS.MINING] 104 @ 0.0033 = 0.3432 BTC [-] [01:27]
kingofsports im 19, finance and accounting student. 2nd year. [01:27]
kingofsports single. [01:27]
mircea_popescu cool. so if you can either pay 10k for a wedding ring right now, or $100 for a wedding ring in 2015 [01:27]
mircea_popescu which would you prefer ? [01:27]
kingofsports $100 in 2015 [01:28]
kakobrekla none of the above [01:28]
mircea_popescu there you go. that's your future. [01:28]
mircea_popescu you've just bought one. [01:28]
mircea_popescu kakobrekla he's 19 not 29. give the guy time. [01:28]
kakobrekla gotta start educating early when the brain is young [01:28]
kingofsports what im saying is, how is it profitable to buy an offered future. Say bitcoins are selling for $130 today, and someone offers a 30 day future of $120. Why is there any demand for that future when someone could sell today for $130. [01:29]
kakobrekla anyway sorry for the intrusion, carry on [01:29]
kingofsports i understand how its profitable for the person offering the future below spot price. [01:30]
kingofsports cause if price stays the same they make money in 30 days [01:30]
mircea_popescu nah, im done. [01:30]
kingofsports why would someone take my $120 in 30 days future when they could sell btc now for $130 is what im asking. whats the motivation / reason behind it. [01:30]
kingofsports cmon im trying to understand it. I read about it but i still dont see why anyone would take a future when they could sell for more TODAY. i watched TDameritrade all their videos and simulations. Options understood, forex ehh understood for most part but futures i dont see the one side why anyone would do it. [01:31]
mircea_popescu you realise the payment is now, and the delivery later ? [01:32]
kingofsports like for your example mirceau why would anyone offer u to sell the ring for $100 in 2 years when they could sell it for $10000 now? [01:32]
kingofsports oh [01:32]
assbot [BTCTC] [COG.F2] 1 @ 4.997 BTC [-] [01:32]
assbot [BTCTC] [COG.F2] 1 @ 4.998 BTC [+] [01:32]
kingofsports that clears it up somewhat. [01:33]
mircea_popescu so if $100 right now for a ring i don't have to deliver for 16 months is worth 9900 for me, i'll offer that deal. [01:33]
kingofsports now i understand it better. now i see. companies make sure steady revenue no matter what thru these futures. [01:33]
kingofsports got it. [01:33]
mircea_popescu exactly. [01:34]
mircea_popescu shit's explained nicely on my blog, but sadly it's in romanian. [01:34]
kingofsports i hear people get absolutely killed sometimes in futures if they dont know what their doing, to me tho it sounds less risky then options tho [01:34]
mircea_popescu it IS less risky than options. it's horribly risky nevertheless. [01:34]
kingofsports oh okay [01:34]
kingofsports theres youtube vids of ppl losing life savings in instants [01:35]
kingofsports thru futures [01:35]

mircea_popescu i recall you were here a month or so back when we did the math, and it was something ridiculous top the tune of 50k [15:54]
ThickAsThieves when you added the current scams [15:54]
ThickAsThieves was around there [15:54]
mircea_popescu but anyway : there's two ways this can work. either burnside gave them "margin" on account that "he knows what he's doing" and "that's what exchanges do" iho, [15:54]
ThickAsThieves doubtful [15:54]
* CheeseDooles (~cheeseDoo@47.54.76.128) has joined #bitcoin-assets [15:55]

ThickAsThieves surely even he could not survive 40k btc from thin air [15:55]
ThickAsThieves or even half that [15:55]
mircea_popescu these'd be the constructions that i can see making him two different flavours of stupid rather than actively complicit. [15:56]
ThickAsThieves or a quarter [15:56]
mircea_popescu exactly. [15:56]
mircea_popescu so play along buster. [15:56]
mircea_popescu and what is this "Even he" ? [15:56]
ThickAsThieves you think it's less likely that it's the scammers throwing their weight around? [15:56]
ThickAsThieves for example [15:56]
mircea_popescu burnside is a minor shit that ran a ltc exchange for a while to little avail, and then jumped on trying to make a glbse clone last year. [15:56]
ThickAsThieves suppose ActM, BTCGarden, Labcoin, and maybe some older ones are all the same group [15:57]
mircea_popescu when did he become some sort of authority ? you probably have more assets than he ever did. [15:57]
ThickAsThieves surely theyd have amassed that kind of coin [15:57]
ThickAsThieves to now throw momentum into their scams [15:57]
mircea_popescu ThickAsThieves they are mostly same group i'm pretty sure. [15:57]
mircea_popescu nah, not quite. [15:57]
ThickAsThieves for example, [15:57]
mircea_popescu i keep track of what scammers got. [15:58]
ThickAsThieves the labcoin IPO was 7k [15:58]
mircea_popescu giga split with a lot of coin, but he's bought miners for them [15:58]
ThickAsThieves and i saw 15k of deposits [15:58]
ThickAsThieves orders* [15:58]
ThickAsThieves so I played [15:58]
mircea_popescu owens etc group never made enough, kenna split with a lot vbuyt sold / lost most [15:58]
ThickAsThieves and banked [15:58]
mircea_popescu there just isn't the coin available in scammor camp [15:58]
ThickAsThieves i think its safe to say that 7k coins got extracted from labcoin buyers [15:59]
mircea_popescu i guess there's always the possibility that some smooth operator got the wool over the eyes of a backer, and bought a bunch of coins to finance a set of scams. [15:59]
ThickAsThieves which could easily have made up part of the btcgarden buyin [15:59]
ThickAsThieves add ActM to that [15:59]
mircea_popescu ThickAsThieves i think that'd be way overshot. [15:59]
ThickAsThieves and you start getting there [15:59]

jorash quantum simulation (in P) is the only means of getting sublinear search times [21:10]
jorash only obvious method at least [21:10]
jorash The proof of concept is Gottesman Knill circuits (Clifford + Stabilizer) which are highly entangled, yet run in classical P time (actually Parity L class) [21:11]
jorash These circuits have been implemented https://github.com/marcusps/GraphSim But they are sub-universal. In order to make them universal you need a 'non-Clifford' gate to add to the Gottesman-Knill circuit. Which normally incurs expoenntial slow down in your classical simulation cost. However this cost can be avoided if you apply enough noise to make the circuit efficent, and only apply [21:12]
jorash quantum EC once at the end of computation (instead of throughout) -- which is what the quoted researcher is saying is probably well suited [21:12]

fractal Again, I'm only going by what the bet actually says -- Thats why I bet NO. because I didn't think their 400Gh unit as advertised would meet targets -- and they'd have to refund (or ship more hardware) to make up for their mistakes and underperformance. [22:24]

tyrion70 what if bitfury changed the site while the bet was running??? [22:54]
Anduck yeah that too [22:54]
fractal tyrion70: it says as advertised . Unfortunately, that is where it was advertised. [22:54]
fractal Then 'as advertised' would make it a bad bet... and it wouldn't have been accepted. [22:54]
tyrion70 it says: [22:54]
tyrion70 Devices must meet advertised performance (25 GH/s unit 40W, 400 GH/s unit 400W) in order to be accepted as valid. [22:54]

Anduck oh [22:55]
Anduck yes [22:55]
tyrion70 I believe in general that a valid bet MUST contain all information needed.. [22:55]

tyrion70 bet language was not clear (should have used the exact language from bitfury) [23:20]
Anduck YES you are RIGHT about that. so they failed that. the unit is MORE THAN 1 M-BOARD [23:20]
fractal Anduck: YES, but thats not what the bet says !! [23:20]
tyrion70 there is no bitfury "unit" therefore ppl betting might have different opinions on what a unit is.. [23:20]

fractal Anduck: That's not what was advertised [23:20]
Anduck true! [23:20]
fractal Anduck: The BET says 'as advertised' [23:20]
Anduck but the performance is still correct! [23:20]
Anduck it wasn't about how much boards the unit must have or is the hardware amount as advertised [23:21]
fractal No, its not. The 400Gh unit , as advertised "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips", is only 365Gh [23:21]
fractal Again, Anduck, Thats not what the bet says.... [23:21]
tyrion70 again, I could argue both sides; so I say it's invalid.. [23:21]
Anduck but the 400gh unit ended up to be 2 m-boards + 19 h-boards. so they fucking failed that hardware amount promise, RIGHT???? but the 400gh unit (which has now changed to 2 m-boards instead of 1) they ordered performs as promised [23:22]
fractal Anduck: Thats irrelevant, as thats not what the bet says. [23:22]
tyrion70 ok [23:22]

tyrion70 now if the bet says: a jupiter at advertized performance (400GH) the bet would be NO right? [23:24]
fractal that would mean they failed on performance.... the bet would be a NO [23:24]

fractal Anduck: Thats not what the bet says. the bet says a 400Gh miner, as advertised -- "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips" -- must be at least 400Gh -- it is not. [23:51]
Anduck dude read what i wrote [23:52]
Anduck read it with care [23:52]
fractal Read what I wrote with care as well. [23:52]
Anduck i did. [23:52]
Anduck they failed that. they had to ship more hw to make the unit [23:52]
fractal I did. [23:52]
Anduck but thats not part of the goddamn bet [23:52]
assbot [BTCTC] [PETA-MINE] 3 @ 0.65 = 1.95 BTC [+] [23:52]
fractal Which means the bet is a no. they shipped more because they missed on performance. its the same as a refund. [23:52]
Anduck the unit changed from 1 m-board filled with 16 h-cards to 2 m-boards with 19 h-cards. so they failed this.. but the UNIT does as performed [23:53]
assbot [BTCTC] [ASICMINER-PT] 1 @ 2.476 BTC [-] [23:53]
fractal Anduck: The fact is that people betting on bitbet.us can ONLY go by what the language of the bet says --- The bet says a 400Gh miner, as advertised, must be 400Gh.... The advertised Miner was -- "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips" -- it is onlt 365Gh. [23:53]
assbot [MPEX] [S.BBET] 5325 @ 0.00069999 = 3.7274 BTC [-] [23:53]
Anduck the advertised miner performance, which the bet is about, is 400gh at <400W. [23:54]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 2 @ 0.02399 = 0.048 BTC [+] [23:54]
fractal Anduck: the fact that they had to do that, means that they missed performance on their 400Gh 'kit' and the bet is a no. [23:54]
Anduck the amount of hardware for the unit changed but it's not part of the bet [23:54]
fractal Anduck: Thats not what the bet says [23:54]
pankkake the bet mentions advertised performance, not advertised specs [23:54]
Anduck indeed [23:54]
Anduck the bet doesn't require the unit/kit to be 1 m-board with 16 h-boards [23:54]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 14 @ 0.023 = 0.322 BTC [-] [23:54]
Anduck it requires the unit/kit to perform as promised, that is 25gh at 40W or 400gh at 400W [23:54]
assbot [BTCTC] [ACTIVEMINING] 2 @ 0.004302 = 0.0086 BTC [+] [23:55]

assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 50 @ 0.023 = 1.15 BTC [-] [23:55]
fractal pankkake: it says the performance of a UNIT AS ADVERTISED. The advertised 400Gh Miner was -- "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips" -- it is onlt 365Gh. [23:56]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 50 @ 0.023 = 1.15 BTC [-] [23:56]
pankkake it's not performance, and what is performance is mentionned in the bet [23:56]
assbot [BTCTC] [ASICMINER-PT] 3 @ 2.475 = 7.425 BTC [-] [23:56]
pankkake stop copy/pasting that line it's annoying [23:56]

assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 47 @ 0.0225 = 1.0575 BTC [-] [23:56]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 3 @ 0.0225 = 0.0675 BTC [-] [23:56]
fractal pankkake: yes, and the unit mentioned in the bet failed on performance. [23:56]
pankkake :| [23:57]
assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 3 @ 0.02233 = 0.067 BTC [-] [23:57]

assbot [BTCTC] [TAT.ASICMINER] 30 @ 0.02232 = 0.6696 BTC [-] [23:57]
Anduck no it doesn't say "performance of the unit as advertised". it says "must meet advertised performance (25 GH/s unit 40W, 400 GH/s unit 400W) " [23:57]
* bloctoc (~bloctoc@c-76-102-197-149.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has joined #bitcoin-assets [23:57]
fractal and the 400Gh unit is "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips" -- which only does 365Gh. [23:57]
Anduck and we agreed already that unit is the same thing as the kit. [23:57]
fractal and 1 kit is 1-mboard. [23:57]
Anduck the kits are promised as the parenthesis says and that is met [23:57]
Anduck no [23:57]
Anduck it was meant to be [23:57]
fractal yes. [23:57]
pankkake please stop mentionning chips [23:57]
Anduck but it's more than that [23:57]
fractal that is what was advertised, and that is what the language of the bet says [23:58]
assbot [BTCTC] [PETA-MINE] 7 @ 0.65 = 4.55 BTC [+] [23:58]
Anduck so they failed that part? but not the performance of the kit? [23:58]
fractal All that matter is the language of the bet. that is why people make NO/YES bets. based on the language of the bet [23:58]
fractal Anduck: the 400Gh Kit failed on performance. [23:58]
fractal A 400Gh kit is "1 Master board 16 hashing boards with 16 Bitfury 55nm ASIC chips for total of 256 chips" [23:58]
Anduck the language says that the kit must perform as promised. the kit perform promise is at the bfsb shop: [23:58]
Anduck Performance: [23:58]
Anduck 400GHash/s [23:58]
Anduck Total power draw max. 400W (Efficiency at wall depends on your PSU) [23:58]
fractal No, it doesn't perform as promised [23:59]
FabianB_ why not just wait a few hours and see what it resolves to? [23:59]
* daybyter has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!) [23:59]
Anduck order 400gh unit -> get 400gh mining power at promised efficiency. how does it not perform as promised? [23:59]
