BingoBoingo Seriously the two episodes which triggered this were drunk white kids who said "nigger". Fighting that is like fighting entropy. It's just going to keep happening. [00:00]
BingoBoingo It's going to be Obama all over again. [00:01]
BingoBoingo The University system is probably going to get a black president, drunk white kids will keep being drunk white kids, and that's that [00:03]

phf mircea_popescu: sorry about not picking up mushrooms, right after i finished the port, i did a move to DC area, and then, after few days, left for a trade show, which i just came back from. i started working on a text only client for eulora, but i didn't get far enough to claim my items with it. [01:41]
phf which brings me to the point that i have folders for all but "make new hardware" item in that list of b-a scope in various states of disarray, and it would be great if there was some prioritization, like it was the case with eulora "oh we need this done, you do it". [01:41]
phf i have some code for gossipd, i'm going to by the spec that's published on trilema, rather then follow up conversation about udp and first packet validation. i wrote enough in c to be able to prime gpg machinery and send packets over the wire (which basically coveres things that i wasn't sure how to do before i started), then i switched to common lisp to get a prototype up. what came out of that so far is updated bindings for lisp [01:42]
phf support of gpgme. the bindings come standard with gpgme release, but what's there was not updated since 2008. officially artifex is still working on that, but i take it nobody's heard from him in a while? [01:42]

mircea_popescu phf no big deal, s'just a game [02:07]
mircea_popescu re the meat : all of these are major projects, the expectation, imo reasonable, is that whoever decides to work on one starts by publishing code, which will vehehehery likely need refactoring perhaps even redesign. because we're here shooting in the dark. so rather than managerial idiocy, i much prefer somnething like how v worked out. asciilifeform phf: callouts to gpg are a dead end [02:12]
asciilifeform phf: and i specifically didn't go with cl because this thing CANNOT cons [02:12]
asciilifeform try to understand why, on your own [02:12]
mircea_popescu asciilifeform they're not a dead end for the following reason : the P must be a stand-alone building block anyway. [02:13]
mircea_popescu they'll, if nothing else, help us understand the api to it. [02:13]
asciilifeform standalone in the sense mpi was in gpg. [02:13]
asciilifeform (statically linked lib) [02:13]
asciilifeform but not separate process. [02:13]
mircea_popescu standalone in the sense that ... well yes. [02:13]
mircea_popescu but i want it to be one thing and everyone statically links IT [02:13]
asciilifeform aha. [02:14]
mircea_popescu rather than five different reimplementations [02:14]
asciilifeform that's what i turned mpi into. [02:14]
trinque punkman: what did those values in the URL stand for, and I can just regenerate them from what I pulled from your sqlite [02:14]
mircea_popescu so in this sense the design is sane, as he has it. callout to "gpg", to be replaced by p [02:14]
asciilifeform 'callout' means something particular, customarily [02:14]
mircea_popescu he didn't use the word. [02:14]
asciilifeform 'i wrote enough in c to be able to prime gpg machinery and send packets over the wire' suggested callout. but why not wait till phf wakes up and clarifies. [02:15]
mircea_popescu aha. [02:16]
phf asciilifeform: gpgme doesn't exactly "calls out", it talks to gpg via a text protocol, but i agree with your overall point. gossip has a fixed set of crypto operations, that can be abstracted, until you finish your crypto state machine gizmo. [02:16]
mircea_popescu can and moreover must be. [02:17]
mircea_popescu if we manage to avoid the insane state of importing openssl bondogle to do crypto we're so far ahead of the game... [02:17]
asciilifeform already there. [02:17]
mircea_popescu hm ? [02:18]
asciilifeform gpg didn't use openssl for anything [02:19]
mircea_popescu nono i was making a simile [02:19]
asciilifeform ah [02:19]
phf as far as lisp, yeah, not practical for deployment, but i started getting bogged down in trivial serialization questions, before i understand clearly how the whole system is supposed to work. once i get the spec as is up, i want to start working through those comments to modify it into a udp lower level system. in any case lisp is better option for gossip prototype, because the spec is so open ended [02:19]
mircea_popescu so gossipd is practically going to be lisp hand-compiled ot c ? [02:20]
phf yes [02:20]
asciilifeform phf: i actually started where you are now [02:20]
asciilifeform phf: but skipped straight to the c on account of realizing that 99+% of the work is precisely in getting this to behave sanely [02:21]
mircea_popescu can lisp even be hand compiled to c ? [02:22]
phf i'm pretty bad a dijkstra programming, i need to see the system behave to reason clearly about it, and c is not it. besides the translation is the tirvial part [02:22]
asciilifeform mircea_popescu: in a very loose sense [02:23]
mircea_popescu phf you're not required to agree to this inasmuch as you're using your own time & hands. [02:23]
mircea_popescu write it in lua if that's genuinely what works for you. [02:23]
asciilifeform phf: the 'translation is trivial' is the mega-mistake. go and bake, e.g., a sane allocator. [02:24]
asciilifeform your unix box doesn't have such a thing. and neither did mine. or anybody else's. [02:24]
phf asciilifeform: boehm gc? [02:25]
* phf ducks [02:25]
* asciilifeform retches [02:25]
mircea_popescu if you end in this situation where you have a beautiful prototype and a buggy implementation people are going to hate you. [02:26]
asciilifeform ^ [02:26]

asciilifeform and this is an example to follow ?!!! [02:26]
mircea_popescu none of these work [02:26]
mircea_popescu aha. [02:26]
phf not the best examples, i agree :> [02:27]

mircea_popescu actually, world famous memory hogs [02:27]

asciilifeform as in when the thing gets planted on a micro we change 3 lines. [02:27]
asciilifeform aha. [02:28]
mircea_popescu this is rather ideal. [02:28]
asciilifeform when i say 'program is to be read', i do not mean in a metaphorical sense of 'most of it' or 'the important parts' [02:29]
asciilifeform but literal. [02:29]
asciilifeform 'this parachute, i wrapped myself. signed, prv. xxxxx.' [02:29]

phf i like that the end result can be wholly signed and produces a spiffy dvi for printing [02:37]
mircea_popescu yes. [02:38]
mircea_popescu it's certainly a "best practice" sorta thing [02:38]
phf it doesn't necessarily has to be particularly intrusive, i've looked at some of his "hacks", and they are very lightly annotated, but the partitioning still makes more sense that the direct flow of a c file [02:39]
mircea_popescu whjat i mean by "best practices sorta thing" : nobody;'s going to hang you if you don't do it, but should seriously consider doing it. [02:40]

pete_dushenski fibreglass doesn't corrode [03:52]
pete_dushenski also, because it expands and contracts at essentially the same rate as the glazing, the window seals are stressed markedly less, improving the system's longevity by reducing condensation and air infiltration [03:53]
pete_dushenski though this similarity in the coefficient of expansion assumes a triple-glazing, which is relatively common here, whereas milder climates will use double, even single-glazed windows [03:55]

punkman "But replying to email on mobile is a real pain, even for short replies." oh so Android sucks for doing anything? [04:28]
pete_dushenski "Another bizarre feature of our early prototype was its propensity to respond with “I love you” to seemingly anything. As adorable as this sounds, it wasn’t really what we were hoping for. Some analysis revealed that the system was doing exactly what we’d trained it to do, generate likely responses -- and it turns out that responses like “Thanks", "Sounds good", and “I love you” are super common -- [04:29]
pete_dushenski so the system would lean on them as a safe bet if it was unsure. Normalizing the likelihood of a candidate reply by some measure of that response's prior probability forced the model to predict responses that were not just highly likely, but also had high affinity to the original message. This made for a less lovey, but far more useful, email assistant. [04:29]
