It had haste and teleport. No tactics.

In order for strategy to be possible and rewarding, there have to be strong tactical limitations in place. This is why the H2 system is so great : yes infantry has a disadvantage against archers. Then again, a charge of Ogre Lords tearing through a bunch of Elves and Druids is a sight to behold. Each situation has its own mix and so on. This was muchly dulled in H3, imo to the game's detriment.

Hmm, in HoMM games the position of units is predefined and a bit stiff besides tight or lose formation and changing order / number of stacks. So in combat you got a few options with slow melee units that don't reach a foe in one turn (considering HoMM2 scenario): either defend if no unit in range (a faster more powerful enemy unit could be nearby, possibly after attacking current unit or another stack) or charge ahead (increasing the risk of being attacked by more units soon, though possibly getting a morale boost and being able to attack, provided there's a positive morale and unit is not undead / mechanical / elemental and such), could also use spells like Haste / Prayer / Myrth or Teleport (if it even had all those spells, probably just the first one hmm) or maybe move around to a corner or better strategical location. Also not sure if HoMM2 had Tactics, allowing you to position units before battle like in HoMM3.
Just brainstorming around a bit regarding the possibilities...
